Interview types and procedure in

Counselling
Definition of counselling interview:
It is one of the important techniques in
counselling. The essential feature of the interview is a dynamic face to
face relationship in which the counselee is helped to develop insights
that lead to self realization.
Ruth strang – “ the interview as the heart of the counselling process to
which other techniques are contributory”.
Erickson- “ A counselling interview is a person to person
relationship in which one individual with problems and needs turns to
another person for assistance”.

 A means of communication with each other.
 An awareness on the part of at least one of the persons regarding
the purpose of interview.

Steps in interviewing :
 Preparation for the interview and establishing rapport.
 The unfolding of the problem
 The joint working out of the problem
 The closing of the interview
 Evaluation of the interview
 Follow up of the interview
Types of interview:
1. The employment interview:
The purpose of the type of interview is to
determine the fitness of the candidates for a particular job . Hence ,the
interviewer puts questions to the interviewee concerning the job.
2. The diagnostic interview :
The purpose of this interview is to get some
information about the home and environmental situation of the client.
3. The introductory interview
The purpose of this interview is to
prepare the stage for further interviews, i.e ., means of establishing an
atmosphere of friendliness , a step towards mutual understanding.
4. Information interview
In this type of interview the counsellor
interview the counsellee with a view to giving him some information
about his performance in varies tests and the interpretation of scores.
5. The research interview
Such interviews are designed with a view
to finding facts from individual about a particular problem. Here the
interviewer is not interested in the individual but facts.
6. The disciplinary or administrative interview:
This may be termed as
a fact finding and treatment interview . the administrator to find out
the causes of the indiscipline and then attempts to bring out
adjustments in the behaviour of the interviewee.
7. The counselling interview
This is the most important interview for
our purpose. It is the face to face situation involving two persons in
which one helps the other in gaining insight into his problems and
assists him in solving the same.
Preparation for the interview
 The need for the interview should be felt but the student.
 The student should come to the interview not as a requirement
of the school but of himself .
 A quiet and orderly place should be provided for interview
purposes.
 The counselling should prepare for the interview by gathering
all the data concerning the student.
 The counselling should be prepare tentative objective for the
interview.
 The counsellor should keep an open mind regarding the problem
 Each interview should be considered as a step in the process of
guiding the pupil.
Role of the counsellor
 All evidence of fatigue, pressure, irritation and anxiety should
be avoided.
 Interview should start with friendly conversation. Greetings
should be pleasant and cordial.
 The student should be helped to approach the main issues
himself .
 On the whole, the discussion should be confined to issues at
hand. There might a temporary shift in the discussion.
 The counsellor may stop occasionally for giving the students
time for recapitulation.
 Nothing should be done to undermine the self respect of the
student .
 Moralizing should be avoided.
 Thinking of the child should be challenged .
Unfolding of the interview
The interview should keep in mind the following points
1. Observation : The counsellor should very carefully observe the
physical reactions, bodily tensions, blushing, excitability
defections etc. of the counsellee.
2. Listening: The counsellee should be allowed to project his
feelings and attitudes and the counsellor should patiently listen
to the counsellee.
3. Questioning : A reasonable number of thought provoking
questions should be asked in a simple language and with a sweet
tone and a pleasing voice.
4. Talking : Adequate talking may be done by the counsellor.

Values of interviewing
The values given by Ruth Strang may be summarised as:
 It help to reduce tension by talking it out
 It serves to accept and clarify negative feelings
 It helps to recognize and reinforce positive relationships
between the counsellor and the counsellee.
 It may develop the insights of the student.
 It is the most dynamic way of understanding the individual as
whole.
 It is natural like conversation.
 It can be made very flexibleso as to suit any situations and
conditions. It can be used for a variety of purposes.
 It is relatively easy to conduct.
 It is very useful in those cases where the individuals are
illiterate.
