Relations & Functions-L2: Basic of Function

The document discusses functions and relations. It begins by defining a function as a special type of relation where each element of the domain has exactly one mapping to the codomain. It then discusses even and odd functions. An even function satisfies f(-x) = f(x) while an odd function satisfies f(-x) = -f(x). Examples of checking whether given functions are even or odd are provided. The document also covers the domain, codomain, and range of functions.

Question
Find domain and Range of function.
f : A→B f (x) = 2x + 3 A = {x / x ∈ prime, x ≤ 10}

Solution A = { 2, 3, 5, 7}
f (x) = 2x + 3
f (2) = 2(2) + 3 = 7
Range = { 7, 9, 13, 17}
f (3) = 2(3) + 3 = 9

Question
If find f : A→B, f (x) = 2x + 3, g : A→C, g(x) = x2
Find range of 1) f + g 2) fg If A = {1, 2, 3}

Solution
(f + g)(x) = 2x + 3 + x2
(f + g)(x) = x2 + 2x + 3
f + g |x=1 = 1 + 2 + 3 = 6
f + g |x=2 = 4 + 4 + 3 = 11
f + g |x=3 = 9 + 6 + 3 = 18
Range of (f + g)(x) = { 6, 11, 18}

If find f : A→B, f (x) = 2x + 3, g : A→C, g(x) = x2
Find range of 1) f + g 2) fg If A = {1, 2, 3}

Solution
(fg)(x) = x2 (2x + 3)
= 2x3 + 3x2
f g |x=1 = 2+3 = 5
f g |x=2 = 2(8) + 3(4) = 28
fg |x=3 = 2(27) + 3(9) = 81
Range of (fg)(x) = { 5, 28, 81}

EVEN – ODD FUNCTION

A function f(x) is said to be even function; if f(– x) = f(x) ∀ x

Graph of an even function is symmetric about y – axis

A function f(x) is said to odd; if f(– x) = – f(x) ∀ x.

Graph of an odd function is symmetric about origin.

Question 7 Check following function is even or odd

x x
f (x) = + +1
ex –1 2
So, it is even function.

Question 8 Check following function is even or odd

1–x
f(x) = log
1+x
Relations & Functions - Lesson 2

1–x
f(x) = log
1+x
1+x
Solution : f(– x) = log
1–x
–1
= log 1 – x
1+ x
1–x
= – log
1+ x
= – f(x)
So, odd function.
Relations & Functions - Lesson 2

Question 9 Check following function is even or odd

f( x) = log x + √ x2 + 1
Relations & Functions - Lesson 2
Solution :

f(– x) = log – x + √ x2 + 1 = log √ x2 + 1 – x

√ x2 + 1 – x ) × (x+ √ x2 + 1 )
= log
x + √ x2 + 1
1
= log = – f(x)
x + √ x2 + 1

So, it is an odd function.
