Lesson 2 Science

The lesson plan aims to teach 4th grade students about speed, velocity, and acceleration by having them read about and discuss the definitions, watch an explanatory video, participate in a demonstration activity, and write a short story applying the concepts. Formative and summative assessments include observing students' use of vocabulary and collecting a completed worksheet. The teacher will reflect on how well the lesson objectives were met and students' understanding of the material.

Subject or Topic: Energy and Speed: Lesson 2 -Speed, Velocity, and Accelera on
Sec on: 390-075/di Censo

STANDARD: (PA Common Core):

S4. C. 2. 1. - Recognize basic energy types and sources, or describe how energy can be changed.
from one form to another.
VII. Performance Objec ves (Learning Outcomes)
A. Students will be able to define and explain speed, velocity, and accelera on by
discussing, par cipa ng in ac vity, and wri ng on their discussion worksheet.

VIII. Instruc onal Materials

A. Student Science Handbooks
B. Student Science Notebooks
C. Discussion Ques on Worksheet
D. Premade Flipbooks
E. Premade Powerpoint
F. Racecar Video

IX. Subject Ma er/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea, new content)
A. Prerequisite skills-
1. Kine c vs poten al energy
2. Defini on of mass, mo on, ma er, and work
B. Key vocabulary-
1. Energy- the ability to do work or to change an object
2. Poten al energy- energy that is stored in the posi on or condi on of an
object
3. Kine c energy- the energy of mo on
4. Speed- how fast an object’s posi on changes over me
5. Velocity- the speed and direc on of an object
6. Accelera on- a change in velocity over me
C. Big idea-
1. Speed, velocity, and accelera on are all related but have different
defini ons.
D. New content-
1. Speed is how fast an object’s posi on changes over me.
2. Velocity is the speed and direc on of an object.
3. When explaining velocity, you must have a direc on.
4. Accelera on is a change in velocity over me.
X. Implementa on
A. Introduc on-
1. Ac vate prior knowledge on speed by showing the video of the race car
provided by curriculum
a) Ask what students think we will be learning about based on video
B. Development-
1. Read about speed and energy (pg 278-280)
a) Read 278 aloud as they puzzle read
(1) Write the defini on of speed in their flipbook
b) Give students me to read about velocity and accelera on in their
table group. They should read to find the defini on, then write
the defini ons of the vocabulary words in their flipbook.
(1) They should also answer #3 on their discussion worksheet
(a) Working as a table group
2. Watch the video “speed and energy” from curriculum
a) Discuss the rela onship between speed and energy
(1) think/pair/share on how did the video say they were
related? - what examples did they give?
3. Play the game “Speed, Velocity, or Accelera on”
a) Review defini ons before beginning
b) Have all students stand up to:
(1) Demonstrate speed by walking
(2) Demonstrate accelera on by star ng slow and gaining
speed
(3) Demonstrate velocity by walking in one specific direc on
(4) A er doing once, call them all out one more me without
promp ng the students on what to do: just call out the
vocabulary word
4. Ask students to cri cally think to connect these words/defini on/ideas to
the real world.
a) Students should write a short story using these three defini ons in
correct context
C. Closure-
1. “Be the Teacher”
a) Students “be the teacher” and share out 3 things they think
everyone should have learned that day
(1) Teacher calls on the first person, then the student calls on
the next student, then the student calls on the last person
- should stand while talking to be the teacher!
D. Accomoda ons (Differen a on)-
1. Students with struggles wri ng will be given a copy of the slideshow in
order to ensure flipbook is filled in
2. Students can answer ques ons alone or with their table group (choice).
E. Assessment/Evalua on plan
1. Forma ve-
a) Observa onal (students using vocabulary while working on
flipbook, discussing differences between two types of energy)
b) Upcoming Collec on of Worksheet
2. Summa ve-
a) Upcoming Authen c and Summa ve Assessment

XI. Reflec ve Response

A. Report of Students’ Performance in Terms of States Objec ves

B. Personal Reflec on
1. What in this lesson can be improved? Did everything go as expected?
2. Did the students have enough me to find their responses with their
group?

XII. Resources
