How to Apply to Be a Prefect or other

Leadership Roles
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:
 Decide to Apply (deadline is Thursday, April 23rd @ 9 am)
 Application Form (use the link posted), Cover Letter & Résumé (in one document) –all due
Thursday, April 23rd 9 am
 One teacher reference + advisor reference (due Tuesday, May 19 th)
 Sit an Interview (scheduled at a time(s) in the entire month of May that work)

STEP 1: DECIDE TO APPLY


a. You may ONLY apply for up to three Prefect positions (not including Head Prefect – on the
form, check the box if you wish to be considered for Head Prefect). You may ONLY apply for
5 ‘other’ roles.
b. Read through the “Senior Two Leadership Positions” document thoroughly.
c. You need to think about whether your abilities and personality align with those demanded
from your positions of interest.
i. Speak to the current Prefects and Prefect Advisors or other students in the roles you
are interested in about their thoughts on the responsibilities of the role.
d. Be prepared to put a lot of time, effort and energy into your application.

STEP 2: COVER LETTER


a. Clearly state your positions of interest in the cover letter.
b. This is your opportunity to explain why you feel you are the best candidate for these Prefect
or leadership positions. Make it impressive!
c. The cover letter is to be one page maximum in length.
d. The letter should be addressed to Mrs. Samson.

STEP 3: RÉSUMÉ
a. Your résumé should be 2 pages maximum.
b. Ensure that it is neat, orderly, and concise.
c. Organize it intelligently (Leadership Initiatives, Service Experiences, Athletics, Job
Experience, Awards, etc.)
d. Each section should be chronological with the most recent activity/position first.
e. Ask guidance counselors for advice if you need it.

STEP 4: REFERENCES
a. Ask your reference upfront if they feel comfortable giving you a good reference.
b. Give your teacher reference and advisor fair warning that you are applying.

STEP 5: SITTING THE INTERVIEW


a. Sit mock interviews beforehand so you feel comfortable. This can be done by just practicing
questions with your friends or family.
b. Address the interview panel respectfully when you enter the interview; introduce yourself to
those people who might not know you.
c. Make eye contact throughout your interview; don’t stare at your hands and try not to fidget.
d. Think about your experiences in advance – when you are asked a question pull on specific
examples of how you demonstrated a certain quality, etc.
e. RELAX and BE YOURSELF! 
