Linear Static - Rigid Element Analysis With RBE2 and CONM2

This document describes performing a linear static analysis with MSC Nastran on a cylindrical structure model with rigid elements modeled using RBE2. Key steps include generating the finite element model, applying material and shell properties, creating a rigid end with RBE2 elements, applying boundary conditions and an inertial load, and submitting the model to Nastran for analysis. The results, specifically displacements along the free end, will then be reviewed.

MSC.Nastran 120 Exercise Workbook 18-3

Suggested Exercise Steps:
■ Generate a finite element representation of the cylinder
structure (i.e., The nodes (GRID) and element
connectivities (CQUAD4) should be defined manually).

■ Define material (MAT1) and element (PSHELL) properties.

■ Create grid point 999 at the center of the rigid end. This
point is to serve as the load application point, as well as the
connection point for the rigid element.

■ Idealize the rigid end with rigid elements (RBE2).

■ Apply the fixed boundary constraints (SPC1).

■ Apply a concentrated mass at the center of the top enclosure,

Grid 999 (CONM2).

■ Apply an inertial load to the entire structure (GRAV).

■ Prepare the model for linear static analysis (SOL 101).

■ Generate an input file and submit it to the MSC.Nastran

solver for linear static analysis.

■ Review the results, specifically the displacements along the

free end.

An MSC.Nastran input file called workshop18.bdf will be generated. This

process of translating your model into an input file is called the Forward
Translation. The Forward Translation is complete when the Heartbeat turns
green.

MSC.Nastran 120 Exercise Workbook 18-7

Generating an Input File for MSC.Nastran Users:
MSC.Nastran users can generate an input file using the data from Table 18.1.
The result should be similar to the output below.

Submitting the Input File for Analysis:
5. Submit the input file to MSC.Nastran for analysis.

5a. To submit the MSC.Patran .bdf file for analysis, find an

available UNIX shell window. At the command prompt
enter: nastran workshop18.bdf scr=yes. Monitor the
run using the UNIX ps command.

5b. To submit the MSC.Nastran .dat file for analysis, find an

available UNIX shell window. At the command prompt
enter: nastran workshop18.dat scr=yes. Monitor the
run using the UNIX ps command.

6. When the run is completed, edit the workshop18.f06 file and

search for the word FATAL. If no matches exist, search for the
word WARNING. Determine whether existing WARNING
messages indicate modeling errors.

7. While still editing workshop18.f06, search for the word:
