Q.1-A] Attempt any THREE of the following 12 Marks

a) State the value of limit of eccentricity for solid circular section. What will be the
minimum value of resultant stress if the load is applied at the position of limit of
eccentricity?
b) State middle third rule. Sketch core of rectangular section

c) A cantilever of length ‘L’ carries a point load ‘W’ at the free end. Draw the deflection
curve for cantilever and state the expressions for slope and deflection at the free end
assuming flexural rigidity as EI.

d) State the differential equations for slope and deflection.

Q.1-B] Attempt any ONE of the following 06 Marks


a) A column 6 m long, fixed at both ends, consists of an I section with flanges 200 mm x
10 mm and web 10 mm thick with overall depth of 300 mm. Calculate buckling load
using Euler’s Formula. Take E = 200 GPa.

b) Calculate safe load of hollow circular steel column of external dia. 150 mm and
internal dia 100 mm. Length of column is 6 meter with both ends hinged. Take ơc =
550 MPa, a = 1/1600, factor of safety = 1.5. Use Rankine’s theory.

Q.2] Attempt any TWO of the following 16 Marks
a) A rectangular pier 800 mm x 1200 mm is subjected to a compressive load of 600 kN
at an eccentricity of 200 mm along the axis bisecting 800 mm side. Find the resultant
stresses at the base of pier.
b) A continuous beam ABD is loaded and supported as shown in figure. Using theorem
of three moments, Calculate support moments and draw B M diagram.

c) Find support moments using Clapeyrons theorem for the beam loaded as shown in
figure. Draw B M diagram.

Q.3] Attempt any TWO of the following 16 Marks

a) A simply supported steel beam 6 m long is circular in cross section, has diameter of
150 mm. Determine the central downward point load that can be placed on it which
will produce the maximum deflection of 10.35 mm. Assume E = 210 GPa . Ignore the
self-weight of beam.

b) Draw SFD and BMD by using Moment Distribution Method for a beam ABC such
that AB= 4m and BC = 1m carrying UDL 6 kN/m over entire length of beam. The
support A is fixed and B is simply supported.
c) A portal frame ABCD is hinged at A and D. AB=CD= 3m and BC= 4m. BC is
horizontal and carries a point load of 40 kN at the centre of BC. Draw SFD and BMD.
Assume EI constant for all members. Use moment distribution method.
Q.4-A] Attempt any THREE of the following 12 Marks
a) A square chimney 20 m high has an opening of 1.25m X 1.25 m inside. The external
dimensions are 2.5 m X 2.5 m. The horizontal intensity of wind pressure is 1.5kN/m2.
calculate the bending stress intensity developed at the base of chimney.
b) State the values and nature of fixed end moments at each end for a fixed beam having-
i) A point load at centre, ii) A udl over entire span
c) Write the advantages and disadvantages of fixed beam over simply supported beam.
d) A fixed beam of 6m span carries a downward point load 60 kN at mid span. Draw
BMD.
Q.4-B] Attempt any ONE of the following 06 Marks
a)
A cantilever beam of 2 m span is subjected to udl of 4 kN/m over entire span and a
downward point load of 5 kN at the free end. Calculate the deflection at the free end
using standard formulae. Take E = 200 GPa and I = 3 x 108 mm4
b) Calculate fixed end moments and draw B M diagram for a fixed beam loaded as
shown in figure. Show all-important values.

a) Define direct and eccentric load. State the effect of eccentric load with respect to
stresses developed.

b) A masonry wall having thickness 450mm is 9m high. It is subjected to horizontal
wind pressure of 1.1 kN/m2 normal to wall. Calculate the maximum bending stress at
wall base.
c) A cantilever beam of length of 4m carries point load of 5 kN at 2m from fixed end.
Calculate deflection at the free end of cantilever in terms of EI.
d) A uniformly distributed load of 15 kN/m from the slab is acting on simply supported
beam of 5m length. Calculate maximum deflection of beam in terms of EI.
e) State expression for Clapeyron’s theorem of three moments for beam with spans of
different M.I. giving meaning of each term.

Q.6] Attempt any FOUR of the following 16 Marks


a) Determine support moments for a continuous beam ABC carrying udl 6 kN/m over
entire spans where A and C are simple supports. AB=BC= 4m. Use Clapeyron’s
theorem.
b) Define stiffness factor. State carry over factor for a member fixed at one end and
simply supported at other end if moment is applied at fixed end.
c) ABC is a continuous beam having all simple supports AB = BC = 5m. A point load of
10 kN acts at mid span of AB. Determine support moments by moment distribution
method.
d) A strut of M.S. has crushing strength of 320 MPa and modulus of elasticity as 200
GPa. Calculate the limiting value of slenderness ratio according to Euler’s theory.
e) A column has effective length of 3.8 m carries an axial point load of ‘W’. Its diameter
is 160 mm, find crippling load. Take 6c = 550 MPa and a = 1/1600.
