TCP/IP Internetworking, Internetwork Principles & Practices: UCCN 2003 UCCN 2243

This document provides an overview of the TCP/IP Internetworking course. It introduces the instructor, Gan Ming Lee, and outlines the course outcomes, topics, assessment, and software used. The course is a continuation of UCCN1003/1004 and focuses on hands-on networking skills like subnetting, IPv6, network analysis, and cross-platform networking using software like Packet Tracer, Wireshark, GNS3 and Linux. Lectures and lab sessions will cover routing, TCP/IP protocols and service provider networks. Students are expected to continue lab work at home to complete all exercises.

UCCN 2243

TCP/IP Internetworking,
Internetwork Principles & Practices
(Lecture 00)

Pre-Lecture:
Overview of the Subject
& some Admin Issues
Welcome
• UCCN2003 – TCP/IP Internetworking
– Close to fully phase out.
– UCCN2003 will follow the syllabus of UCCN2243

• UCCN2243 – Internetworking Principles &

Practices

• My name is Gan Ming Lee

• My email: [email protected]
• My room #: NG - 049
Course Outcome
• Describe the TCP/IP protocol suite architecture with the
functionalities and operations of each layer;
• Differentiate the mechanisms of network and transport layer
protocols in TCP/IP;
• Design IPv4 networks using subnetting techniques, classless IP
addressing, variable length subnet mask, and network address
translation, under cross platform environment;
• Analyze network traffics of TCP/IP protocols with network
sniffers and network forensics techniques;
• Evaluate different design and migration issues of IPv6 networks
from the perspective of IPv4 networks in terms of subnetting,
routing, operations, and configurations;
• Examine the operations of TCP/IP protocol suite in the settings
of WAN.
Students of This Class…
• Information System Engineering (IA)

• Communications and Networking (CN)

• Computer Science (CS)

• Computer Engineering (CT)

• Four degrees, 4 groups

• The main target “audience” of this class:

– Students who are serious about networking
– Other IT students who are interested in taking professional
certification such as CCNA (Cisco), and HCNA (Huawei).
Mode of Delivery
• This class only consists (officially)
– Lectures and practical sessions
– Same as UCCN1003 and UCCN1004

• Every week, you should have:

– 2 hours of lectures
• For about 14 weeks (depending on your progress)
• Heavy at the beginning of the semester, but lighter load towards
the end of the semester.
– 2 hours of practical sessions.
• For 13 weeks – 10 to 11 labs + practical test / assessments
• Practical tests during lab sessions
Lab Sessions
• N108 & N110
• Time slots for labs
– Every week 2 hours
• Content of labs
– Some of the labs are designed so that you CAN’T finish it in
2 hours
– You have to continue your lab at home in order to complete
all the case studies or exercises.
– Again, UCCN2003/2243 is a lab intensive unit.
Continuation of UCCN1003/1004
• This unit is a DIRECT continuation of UCCN1004
– Please refer back to your UCCN1003/1004 notes.
– All the materials in UCCN1003/1004 will be used and
examinable in this class including final exam.
– Those who have their UCCN1003/1004 transferred (e.g TARUC),
please get your UCCN1003/1004 notes from your friends.
– I expect you to know the LAN, IP rules, ACL, VLAN, routing,
layered model, and some basic protocols.
– I expect you to know how to use Packet Tracer and Wireshark.
– I will give some review, but a lot of materials in
UCCN2003/UCCN2243 are built upon the foundation of
UCCN1004
– I focus a lot of hands-on and practical aspects of networking.
Assessment and Grading Scheme

• Coursework 20%
– Mid-term test/assignments
• Practical 30%
– Practical tests / assessments:
• Final Exam 50%
– 2 hours
– Close book exam
Text Books
• Comer, D. E. (2014). Internetworking with
TCP/IP Volume One (6th ed). Pearson.

• TCP/IP Protocol Suite. (4th ed.). Boston:

McGraw Hill. by Forouzan, B. A. (2009).

• Routing Protocols and Concepts, CCNA

Exploration Companion Guide, Cisco Press by
Rick, G., Allan J.(2007).

• However, you can’t find a lot of technical terms

and concepts in this class from the text books
– Follow my notes closely.
About This Semester
• Attendance are taken for the lab sessions
– Please come for the labs
– I am only asking 1 and half hours per week for around 11
weeks.

• I will update some of the lecture notes and lab manuals

every week.
– I apologize for any “late uploading” of lecture notes and lab
manuals.
.
Topics of UCCN2003/2243
• Review of enhanced IPv4 subnet rules.
• Subnetting
• Network Address Translation
• IPv6
• Cross platforms networking & Linux
• Network analysis and forensics
• More details on IP, and TCP (+ UDP too)
• Service provider (e.g. telco)
• Frame Relay

• Please note that this is a very “condensed” and “compact”

class. You have to put in a lot of your effort.
• You will find that two hours lecture and 2 hours of lab are not
“enough”.
Networking Software
• By the end of this class, you should know the following
software packages
– Cisco’s Packet Tracer
– Linux
– Wildpacket
– similar to Wireshark, hasn’t been taught in UCCN1003/1004
– GNS3

• We use simulator so that you can continue your lab work at

home.

• No real routers and switches for this class….

New software: Wildpackets
New software: GNS3
Linux
UTAR IP Calculator

• An IP calculator that is
made specially for
UCCN1003/1004 and
UCCN2003/2243 by
UTAR student.

• It is a product of a final
year project.
WBLE and Consultation

• I will put teaching plan, lecture notes (pdf),

and lab manuals plus announcement in
WBLE.

• If you have any other question on this

subject, you may also consult / email me
