Summary
• Satellite observed nighttime lighting in China more than doubled
from 1992 to 2009
from 1992 to 2009.
• The growth in lighting tracks growth in both GDP and population.
• This pattern is typical of the countries undergoing rapid

development (e.g. Vietnam, Algeria, Albania, Portugal and others).

• Developed countries, like USA have stable lighting across the same
time period, perhaps due to improvements in lighting efficiency?
• There is an indication that the growth of lighting in China slowed
due to the economic downturn that started in 2008.
• At some point it is anticipated that growth in lighting in China will
