Internet of Things
- Internet of things is basically a concept about connecting physical devices around the world to
the internet and allows collecting, sharing and receiving data. It has a potential of giving an
impact on how we live and makes our life better. It is like a network of connected things which
includes the people.
- Internet of things is based from the idea of adding sensor and intelligence to basic objects on
which everything than can be connected will be connected. It includes all the unconventional
electronic devices that exchange data via the internet using a local or wireless network.
- Yes, because for me, the concept of internet of things will make our lives better and easier. It
creates a relationship between the people and the things around them. It will lead to a lot of
advantages that can be very beneficial to a lot of people like making our homes smarter and it
will be the solution for the development of intellectual services for optimization of the use of
household resources. Imagining that if you forgot to do something at home, everything can be
fixed from any point of the world. It can also be very helpful to modification of transport
systems and as well as work for the benefit of modern medicine in where people have an
opportunity to take care of themselves just by sitting at home and allows the field of IoT to do it
for them to monitor their health remotely.
- In the Philippines, we encounter IoT when we use grab and uber apps because these are an
example of IoT since it uses connected devices like smart phones and representing the
interaction between the passengers and the cars. Iot enable the grab and uber users to get a
ride as soon as possible, and it also allow the drivers to collect the closest passenger, saving
both time and gas. The grab and uber drivers also used maps or GPS to guide their way to the
desired location of the passengers. Another situation is using apple watch which is connected to
your phone to help you in monitoring your health. It can help you monitor your heart rate,
glucose levels and also, help you detect atrial fibrillation, hypertension, sleep apnea and
diabetes. If we have and emergency, like for example, you forgot to print your homework, but
then you can still print it by getting the file from your phone and send it to the computer or
printers.
4.) How do you think IoT will evolve and affect Filipino society in the next 3 to 5 years?
- I think 3 to 5 years from now, everything will become really high-tech because people are very
productive and innovative. It will feature built-in computers that can function without human
input. Home automation will be created in which we expect to see homes to become smarter. It
includes all the smart appliances, safety/security systems and energy equipment. Smart cars will
continue to grow and evolve which will enhance consumer experiences and even help drivers
reserve parking spots. The IoT also offers a positive impact on commercial transportation by
making it easier to monitor fuel tanks, connect endpoints and improve safety while streamlining
manageability and simplifying operations. IoT will transform the way patients and doctors
communicate via technology that can read vital signs and monitor conditions. In the coming of
years, jobs will be automated in where machines and robots will be created to replace human
beings. This will greatly affect the Filipino society in a way that they could benefit with the
concept of IoT and make their lives better but at the same time, many people will become
jobless because all of the things around us will most probably become automated and won’t
require human labor anymore.
5.) What do you think is the relationship/ cause and effect of IoT in media and information
literacy?
- The relationship of IoT in media and information literacy is that everything will become easier
for us, we can easily access to the internet and social medias through the convenience that IoT
have brought to us. We can communicate with each other, share and receive information
through using both the IoT and media and information literacy. However, this will cause some
negative effects on which people might abuse or take advantage to the convenience of IoT, the
use of media and the information they got from the different sources or forms of information
providers. They might be very dependent on the IoT and this may tolerate people’s laziness.
