SUCCESSFUL COOPERATIVE
Successful cooperative is not just all about to earn profit to be successful, but by
putting an effort to achieved different goals. Behind the success of every
cooperative have a story. They used to have their own strategy to stand and worked
from poverty to prosperity. Today, the cooperative has its own office, bakery,
pharmacy, and rice and corn mill and etc. With the assistance of land bank, the
cooperative has accumulated P3.6 million assets. The cooperative can now extend
credit to its members, and its encourages savings deposits. Through unity, faith,
and hard work, the members of the cooperative were able to achieve seemingly
impossible goals.

DIFFERENT SUCCESSFUL COOPERATIVE IN THE CONTRY

a. Medical Mission Cooperative

In 1982, a group of young doctor. Led by Dr.Jose Tiongco, organized the


medical mission foundation. At time there were shortages of medical resources,
like medicine, equipment, and personnel. This resulted to closure of some
hospitals. Despite such problems, a group of young doctors put up the medical
mission hospital in support of the health care program of the government. The
dedication and social awareness of the doctors makes the cooperatives success
and one factor which contributed to their success is that all doctors are natives
of Davao City and they all worked in the department surgery.

b. Tagbakin Multi-PURPOSE Cooperative

This cooperative established in 1991 to help those disabled people who were
referred to the cooperative by the DSWD, parishioners and client in metro manila
and in quezon. Gia veloso catinding is a chairperson of cooperative who worked
on a term paper when she was in high school about rehabilitation of the disabled
and aims to help the poor and physically handicapped. When she put up her
cooperative enterprise, she did not think about the profit but her goal or mission
is to help the disabled through livelihood thrust. The skills, training, technology,
transfer, livelihood and value redirection market research, product development
management, human resources management, interpersonal values, and various
discipline complement the total self-development modules/programs of the
cooperative.

c. Soro-Soro Ibaba Multipurpose Cooperatives

25years ago, a simple farmers’ association was organized in batangas city. Its
principal objective was to liberate the farmers from the clutches of loan sharks.
Today, the cooperative was not able to drive away the usurers, but it has also
been able to help its members hurdle the problems of poverty, unemployment,
and lack of available credit. The said cooperative has become a model
cooperative for the whole province of batangas. From its humble beginnings, the
cooperative went through a lot of transformation and struggle. The cooperative
became a consumer cooperative, and then graduated into a development
cooperative covers 25 barangays and five towns.it has a mini-grocery store, and
a savings a bank, together with a lending program. Its 1995 financial statement
showed p33.5 million as its total assets. The cooperatives is properly managed.
Financial records and reports are up-to-date. These are available to the
members. Opinions of each member are recognized and respected. Rules are
made clear for all the members. Leaders of the cooperatives claimed that the
success of their cooperative has been due to the hardwork, perseverance, and
cooperation of the members. The concern of the sor-soro cooperative for total
human development likewise contributes to its success. The officers meet
regularly to monitor closely the operations of the cooperatives.

d. Antongalan-Agusan Multi-Purpose Cooperative

The cooperative started in operations with only P3,000 seed capital. It


provided loans to farmer members for their small-scale livelihood projects. The
cooperative borrowed 15 million from the land bank of the Philippines, with that
they were able to finance more livelihood projects, such as rice trading and
banana production, among others, because of its good record of repayments,
the cooperatives obtained another loan of P21 million. This time the
cooperatives had 84 members coming from five barangays with about 500
hectares of irrigated farmlands.

e. Tubod Farmers Irrigators Multi-Purpose Cooperatives

Starting as a bayanihan group in 1958. A group of small farmers in tubod,


surigao del norte was able to irrigate the rice lands in two barangays. In 1970
the members of the group organized themselves into tubod farmers’
associations. The tubod cooperative is managed by individuals who have
adequate knowledge on rice production, cattle breeding operations, and post-
harvest operations, such as palay drying, rice milling, palay trading, and
marketing. The cooperative is also engaged in inputs trading (such as fertilizers,
insecticides, farm tools, etc.) and trucking services. In addition, the cooperative
has a sari sari store.it is the whole saler of coca-cola soft drinks and line of
products in the towns of Algeria, mainit, and tubod.

f. San Jose Del Monte Agro-Industrial Development Cooperative

The cooperative was formed in 1991 with 26 members and a dees capital of
P3,000. It has obtained a P.995 million loan from the land bank of the Philippines
for its crop production. The members of the cooperative cultivate 54 hectares of
land owned by the araneta family, thay plant beans, eggplant, okra, pepper,
among others. The cooperative also manages the 5,000 mango tress on their
own, the member s of the cooperatives maintains another 3,000 mango trees.
The LBP funded the mango production with P1.1 million. The cooperative is
responsible for cultivating, fertilizing and spraying the mango trees. 70 percent
of the mangoes are sold to exporters who market them to hong kong and japan.
A mango tree produces an average of seven crates with an average of 25 kilos
per crate. The cooperative produces 875,000 kilos in one year with gross sales of
P10.5 million. At the present, the cooperatives have about P10 million total
assets. Just 5 months after implementing its rehabilitation program,the
cooperatives experienced dramatic changes,collections of unpaid dues and
loans. Its projected hospital building was transformed into a canteen-grocery and
inputs trading center. In the first month a loan, earning from the trading center
reached P38,000 andP5,000 played an important role in the economic recovery
of the antongalon cooperative. The bank trained second line officers and
supervisors of the cooperative to ensure a continuous stream of qualified
leaders.

Most outstanding cooperatives (1994)

a. Catanaunan Multi-Purpose Cooperative-

The Catanaunan Multi-Purpose Cooperative Inc. of catanaunan quezon


was organized by former kursilitas whose desire was to provide economic
upliftment to the people of the town. The town has always been a victim of
natural calamities and social disorders . However, the various livelihood
projects of cooperative, such as furniture-making, bakery, cattle raising,
farming and fishing, the town has gradually attained economic recovery with
the help of the LBp, the cooperative has been able to hurdle seemingly
insurmountable obstacles like extreme poverty, slow progress, and the
presence of rebels. At present, the cooperative has more than 800 members
with more than P7 million total assets. The cooperative has taken more
efforts of improving the social conditions of the town through community
service, like reforestation projects, relief services in time of emergency, free
medical service to the member, sanitation projects, and the distribution of
toilet bowls. The cooperatives won the first place category under the land
bank gawad pitak award.

b. Christ the king multi-purpose cooperative

This cooperative got second award in 1994.In 1995, it became first


place as the most outstanding in the country based on Land Bank evaluation.
From a P21 million assets in 1994, it rose to P31.15 million in1995.The
cooperative continues to gain strength with the helps of lbp,rotary clubs,and
NGOs.

c. Lamac Multi-Purpose Cooperative

It is a village of Pinamingajan Cebu, in the past, it was a poverty-


stricken barangay with no roads, electricity, transportation, and water
system. However, through the cooperation and determination of the village
people to improve their community, success has been achieved. However,
the cooperatives suffered a major setback. its dishonest manager pocketed
the funds of the cooperative. By the middle of 1994, the members lost their
respect and trust for the cooperatives. As a result, unpaid dues of P18 million
and unpaid loans of P15 million remained uncollected. fortunately, some
board of member decided to save the cooperatives from total collapse. A new
leadership took over and drafted a master plan to restore the viability of the
cooperative.
d. Christian Farmers KBCASI 1995
It has more than 400 members and more than P28 million assets. The
religious farmers’ members have a visionary minister as their cooperative
leader. The cooperative members strongly believe that their progress
depends on their own efforts. so, they pooled their small resources to prevent
usurers and palay traders from exploiting them. They organized their
cooperative primarily to market their palay products, as a results, their
incomes have increased .no middlemen were involved. Through this way, the
economic conditions of every cooperative member have started to improve.
Due to good management, the cooperative is now the owner of two
warehouses, two trucks, library computers, radio communication, and rice
mill. The cooperative with its P28 million assets become economically stable.
In fact, commercial banks in talavera, Nueva ecija, where the cooperative is
located, have been courting the cooperative to be their customer. The
Christians farmers’ cooperative obtained third place a LBP gawad pitak
award.

e. United Sugarcane Planters of Davao Multi-Purpose Cooperatives


It was organized in 1984 as a marketing arm of the davao sugarcane
planters association.it has more than P10 million assets. Among them are 16
tractors,6 hauling trucks,4 services vehicles,2 trailers, and 17 motorcycles. In
addition, individual members own a total of 100 hauling trucks. The
cooperatives extend its services to its members in the form of credit
provisions, technical and marketing assistances college scholarships, and
free medical services.it is also involved in effective technology transfer,
particularly in sugarcane cultivation. with its more than 2,600 members, the
cooperative has become an important contributor to the upliftment of the
economy of davao. For its outstanding achievement,it received the third
place category of the land bank gawad pitak award.
