Duration Mondays and Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:00 to 1:50 pm

OUTCOMES
Unit Unit 8: Making Requests and Asking for Advice
Outcomes At the end of this unit, the students will be able to:
1) Explain situation, then make request decline and give reason.
2) Produce correct form and movement for fingerspelling months using Incorporate
number for MONTH.
3) Participate in dialogue about situations, making requests and agreeing with conditions.
4) Modify verbs to agree with subjects and objects (from me to you to someone to another)
5) Produce correct form and movement when giving phone numbers
6) Explain situation, make request and agree with conditions.
7) Comprehend and demonstrate sentences involving negation.
8) Comprehend interrupts and explain why you are late or have to leave early in a polite
way in the Deaf culture.

Lesson Lesson: Months


Outcomes At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:
1) Comprehend and demonstrate appropriate fingerspelling (lexicalized) following the
calendar (Jan, Feb, March, and etc.)
2) Comprehend and demonstrate grammatical tense (past, now, future) with MONTH.
3) Produce and comprehend 1-9 MONTH and 10+ MONTH numeral incorporation signs.
4) Produce and demonstrate seasons during the calendar year such as spring, summer, fall,
and winter.
5) Comprehend and apply what deaf people usually do during the seasons such as Deaf
events.

Standards 1.1: Students use ASL to engage in conversations and provide information, express feelings and
emotions, and exchange opinions.
2.2: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and
perspectives of American Deaf culture.

LESSON PROCEDURE

Activity Description Length


Roll Call/ Teacher begins the class by pointing one of the students randomly and asks 10 mins
Opening the student to fingerspell his/her name. The student fingerspells his/her
name and the teacher will ask the student to come up with a sign that starts
with the ASL handshape (e.g. “B” DOOR) Then, a student signs any word of
the ASL handshape. The student will then point at another student and the
process repeats.
During the Icebreaker activity, students ask each other what s/h do/did last
weekend and this weekend. Then, teacher asks a student what he/she did
do/did this week and last weekend.
Review Give an example by discussing situation and making a request. 5 mins
After that, students sit in the circle, have students wave each other to get
their attention, and have everyone “make a request” with

__________________q. Again, students will get others’ attention and have

Signer A ask “make a request” with __________________q.
NOT-MIND (do favor)
After their practice, have A/B students display how to ask a make a request
in front of classmates. Signer A asks signer B a favor by asking “Can
you……?” and Signer B responses “Sure”.

Directed Areas of focus:
1) Fingerspelling (lexicalized) patterns for the months (Slides 2-7)
-Show a picture of calendar
-fs for each month and have students copy
2) Month with numbers 1-9 incorporated
-Sign 1-9 months and have students copy
-Display the difference between 1-9 MONTH and 10 MONTH and
have students copy. (Slide 7)
-Sign grammatical tense with MONTH

2) Annuals and Seasons in events (Slides 8-9)


-Show events that occur annually (Christmas, July 4th, Super Bowl,
-Point to each picture of seasons: sign AUTUMN, WINTER,
SPRING, AND SUMMER.
-Point to a picture of FOOTBALL and ask students which season it
is.
-Point to a picture of BEACH and ask students which season it is.
-Point to a picture of SNOWBALL and ask students which season it
is.
-Point to a picture of SUNFLOWER and ask students which season it
is.

Guided Demonstrate paired dialogue for each: 5 mins


Practice 1) Two students in a group pick a month and discuss. (1.5 min practice)
-Each group fingerspell a month and ask to each other what they do
in that month
2) Two students in a group display and discuss 1-9 months (1.5 min
practice)
-Each group discussed past and future related to 1-9 months
-Ask to each other what/when they do/did in 1-9 months

3) Two students in a group pick a season and discuss (1.5 min practice)
-Sign a season and tell their favorite season and tell why

Independent In the drawing activity, in groups of 4, each group discusses what to draw a 10 mins
Practice picture on the white board. Drawing a picture must be one of seasons (e.g.
WINTER with snowmen, fireplace, and cabin). Then, each group will create
a story based on season(s), name of months, and the number of months.
Have a student from each group will tell a story in front of the audience.
Cultural Describe what deaf people usually do in each of a season. 5 mins
Application -Deaf people go to Homecoming in OCT
-Deaf camps during summer time (Youth camps and TimberFest)
-Deaf Awareness in SEPT
-Deaf Expo

Closure In Unit 8, quickly ask students to share what they’ve learned during class. 5 mins
Explain what students will do with their assignment via GoReact. Answer
questions. Dismiss class.
Assessment Informal: During paired and group activities, model ASL, constructive N/A
feedbacks, rephrase, clarify, form of movement, etc.
Observation: During paired and group activities, check how they do during
group activities.
Formal: Submit 30 seconds- 1 minute video via GoReact sharing your
experiences in the real event that we discussed in class. This must include
features; fingerspelling months (e.g. Jan or April), month (incorporated
numbers), and seasons (e.g. Fall or Spring). Evaluate using a rubric
(attached).
Formative: Feedbacks being provided via GoReact so students can do final
draft. Feedbacks will be based on Rubric.

approved, students will be given letters to present to their instructors in order
