Week 4 Blog

This weekly journal entry from a student documents their planning process for their filmmaking project (FMP). They completed planning documents including interview questions and potential interviewees. Researching the organization they plan to interview helped them understand stances and structure interview questions. Test shoots were difficult alone but came out moderately well. Improving interview questions allowed for more open discussion. Location research was challenging without access but assumptions were made. The student is on track and plans to review learning outcomes to stay on schedule for production.

WEEKLY JOURNALS

This is where you think about your FMP learning journey and development.
Do not simply describe what you did - consider what you have learnt and how this has benefitted
your project. What do you need to improve?

Week Four - Planning

PLANNING

What did you learn from your This week I completed the planning booklet, which
planning this week? includes interview questions, interviewee research,
location recces and proposed interviewees.
When researching in WFTV I learnt a lot about them
and their stances and aims. This has allowed me to
understand the organisation as a whole a lot more,
which I think is very key when you plan to interview
someone because then it allows you to structure
interview questions based on the organisation and
you can open more of a conversation because you
understand the organisation.
Whilst coming up with ideas for my interview
questions, I learnt the importance of having good
questions, seeing as these will help make my piece
into what it is, I needed to ensure that the questions I
asked related to my topic, had room for conversation
to grow and allow my interviewee to give open
answers.

What issues did you encounter and I found it difficult to do the test shoots because I had
how did you overcome them? no one to do them on, so I had to operate the camera
whilst being the test subject, I found this quite
inconvenient due to having to manually focus the
camera and ensure the camera angles were correct
and it wasn’t too zoomed in. However, in the end, I
made do with what I had, and the test pictures came
out moderately well.

I found it hard to come up with ideas for my interview

questions where I was not repeating myself or asking
the same question but in different ways, however, I
overcame this by just spending more time on my
questions and thinking them through thoroughly and
ensuring that they all made sense and were suitable
for an interview.

There wasn’t much information on WFTV, they just

reused the same paragraph to describe themselves,
so I found YouTube videos and articles written about
them, and this helped me to understand the
organisation more, for example, whilst looking on
YouTube, I found videos from their award shows, and
this showed me that the organisation is very serious
about what they do and the passion they have for
helping women in film. There was also a limited
number of interviews with members of the
organisation, however, it led me to know more about
the company and the stances that they have with
women in film.

Due to being in lockdown, I won’t be able to actually

film my documentary, however, I still researched the

location of their offices so then I could complete a
location recce, it was hard to do this because I do not
know anything about the building and how big their
offices actually are, so I had to assume a lot of things
or just labels things as unknown, for example I do not
know how many plug sockets they have, but I had to
assume that there were at least a few but in case
they didn’t have many I would bring batteries for my
camera.

How has your planning I had to change some of my interview questions

developed/changed during the because they did not feel good enough for an
planning stage? interview and did not allow for open answers.
Improving my questions has now allowed for more of
a discussion and interesting topics for my interviewee
to talk about. I think this is extremely important
because if my questions are basic, the answers given
could be blunt and also basic, meaning my audience
would have less of a chance to learn about the topic
of women in film and my aim of educating people
would be reduced.

How well have you managed and Due to being in lockdown, I am unable to film my
organised crew to be in available documentary, meaning I do not need a crew,
when you need them? however, I did make a crew list where I said anyone
who was available to help me could help, and I would
only need one person due to only needing someone to
operate the second camera and help me ensure I’m
not missing anything whilst filming and I am not
rushing through things. I think having an assistant or
someone to help is very useful because if you are
working by yourself you could forget things and then
only realise whilst editing or when the production
stage is over.

Are you on track for the week? If I am on track.

not, how far behind are you?

What work do you need to complete I am planning to go through my LO1 and LO2 and
outside of lessons to stay on track? ensure everything is to a high standard and I have
everything on my page.
