Triangular Wave Generator (Using 555 Timer/Operational Amplifier) Digital Output Display Frequency To Voltage Converter

The document describes a circuit to generate a 1-10kHz triangular wave and measure its frequency with a digital display. It consists of three blocks: 1) a triangular wave generator using a 555 timer or op-amp, 2) a frequency to voltage converter that uses a 555 timer pulse and digital counter to count periods in 5ms and convert to frequency in kHz, and 3) a digital output display that converts the 6-bit counter output to a voltage for an analog display. Each block is designed separately in NI Multisim before combining.

Design a Schmitt Trigger based triangular wave generator followed by a digital system to read its

frequency. The Triangular Wave Generator must have a frequency between 1-10kHz and amplitude
suitable for the next stage. The frequency then needs to be measured by designing a suitable circuit
for converting the analogue output to give a digital display proportional to frequency of the signal.
Each block shown below in Figure 1 must be designed separately before combining all the blocks
together. You need first to show theoretical design of the circuit, then implement it in NI Multisim.

The block Frequency to Voltage Converter should take the triangular wave signal as input and count
the periods in a predefined time interval. For that reason, use the 555 timer and set it up so that it
generates a pulse of duration 5ms. This pulse should enable the digital counter to detect and count
the pulses related to the triangular wave signal. The number counted within the time interval of 5ms
should be converted into the frequency (in terms of kHz). The digital counter needs to have 6 digits
because the maximal number to count is 50. This is illustrated in the schematic in Figure 2 below.

The block Digital Output Display should take the content of the 6-bit counter as the digital input and
convert it into voltage proportional to the obtained value. This voltage value should be displayed
using the analogue display.
