Listening Lesson Plan

This listening lesson plan is for an upper-intermediate English class of 18-20 year olds. [1] The objectives are to improve listening skills, practice listening for gist and specific details, and guide comprehension of the listening text. LISTENING LESSON PLAN

Time: 20 minutes
Level: Upper- Intermediate
Gender: F/M
Age: 18-20
Materials: Handouts/pictures
Interaction: Ss/Ss – T/Ss
Anticipated Problems: The students may have difficulty in understanding the listening text
completely

OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, the students

1) will have improved their listening skills in upper-intermediate degree.

2) will have practiced listening for the gist and for the specific information.

3) will have guided the development of their understanding of the listening text.

PRE-LISTENING

Time: 5 min.
Materials: Pictures
Interaction: T/Ss-Ss/Ss
What the students do : The students asked to talk about the pictures and share their ideas
for any urban legends that they know
Grouping : Whole class
Aims:

- To motivate the students to get to the topic.


- To give students a reason for listening
- To activate their background information
- To contextualize the listening text

STEPS
1) The teacher tells that she has read something an interesting also funny and want to share
with them
2) The teacher starts to tell by showing some pictures; meanwhile she also asks students’
opinions.
3) When it comes to the picture before the last one, the teacher wants the students to predict
what can happen next.
4) After collecting their predictions the teacher shows the last picture and tells what happens.
5) The teacher tells that it is actually a funny urban legend and asks them if they want to learn
more about them and moves into the listening.

WHILE LISTENING

Time: 10 min. (5 min. for each session)


Materials: Handouts
Interaction: T/Ss-Ss/Ss
What the students do : The students are asked to listen to the text, to match the pictures with
the stories they hear, put them in order, fill in the gaps and write the story numbers of each
sentence in the exercise
Grouping: Whole class

• First Listening

Aims:
- To get the students to understand the stories in general.
- To get the students to have the main idea about them.

STEPS
1) The teacher introduces the text and gives some information by saying ‘’ Now, you will hear
three different stories which are actually urban legends.’’
2) The teacher gives the handouts
3) The teacher gives them a short time to have a look at the pictures in the first exercise
4) The students are asked to listen to the text and to find the pictures which belong to the
stories and put them in order
5) While listening the teacher pauses the tape recorder to ask if it is difficult for them and may
give some time.
5) After listening the text teacher checks their answers.

• Second Listening

Aims:
- To get the Sts have more specific information about the text.
- To get them understand the text in detail.

STEPS
1) Before listening to the stories again, the Ss are asked to have a look at the part B.
2) Ss are asked to fill in the gaps and write the story numbers for each sentence.
3) While listening the teacher may pause it according to the students’ needs.
4) After listening the teacher gives them some time for their answers.
5) The teacher checks their answers and corrects if there is a mistake.
POST LISTENING

Time: 5 min.
Materials: pictures
Interaction: Ss/Ss
What the students do: The students write an urban legend by looking at the title and pictures
on the board
Grouping: groups of five students

Aims:
- To improve their writing skills with the help of creativity.
- To help the students integrate what they have learnt from the text into their existing
knowledge.

STEPS
1) The teacher puts some pictures and a title on the board.
2) The teacher says that it is also an urban legend and wants each group to write a funny story
by making a connection between the pictures and title
3) The teacher also specifies that the group which writes a story which is closer to the real one
will get a prize.
4) After each group finishes its story one volunteer from each group tells their story.
5) After listening all the stories they made up, the teacher tells the real one and gives a prize
to the winner group which wrote the most familiar story with the real one.
