Learned Vs

The developmental lesson plan aims to teach 3rd grade students about the difference between inherited and learned traits over the course of 50 minutes. Students will watch a video, complete an anchor chart, play an inherited vs. learned traits jeopardy game, do a paddle review activity identifying traits, and finish with a worksheet assessment. The lesson uses visuals, hands-on activities, and group work to engage students in learning the key concepts and differentiate instruction.

The third-grade students will identify the meaning of learned traits by completing the
“inherited or learned?” activity.

Content/Facts: Inherited vs. Learned Traits
 Students will have learned the difference between Inherited and Learned Traits.
 Students receive their inherited traits from their parents.
 Students LEARN the learned behaviors/traits from their families or cultures (Linking
Diversity)
 Students may get one inherited trait from their mother, and another inherited trait from
their father.
 Students will learn the definition of inherited traits.
 Students will learn the definition of learned behavior/traits.

Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:

1. Students will watch the video at this the link: https://youtu.be/KT5BVr7vOzY

During the video, the teacher will ask questions:

1. Give one example of an Inherited Trait from the video.
2. Give one example of a Learned Trait from the video.
To further engage students in the content.

Yesterday scientists, we talked about Diversity. Today we are going to talk about learned and
inherited traits.

Development/Teaching Approaches

1. PowerPoint/Anchor Chart
a. After the students watch the short video clip, the teacher will then start a short
mini lesson on the difference between inherited and learned traits.
b. The teacher will pull up a PowerPoint on the board about learned and inherited
traits.
i. Slide 1: Title Page: Learned vs. Inherited Traits. The teacher will say
the title out loud.
ii. Slide 2: Learned Traits: Changed because of an experience. The teacher
will say the definition and explain the two picture examples to the class.
iii. Slide 3: Inherited Traits: Passed down from parent to offspring. The
teacher will say the definition and explain the two examples to the class.
iv. Slide 4: Example 1: Rolling tongue. The teacher will tell the class this is
an inherited trait.
v. Slide 5: Example 2: Using Sign Language to communicate. The teacher
will tell the class that this is a learned trait.
vi. Slide 6: Example 3: Birds Migrating. The teacher will tell the class that
this is an inherited trait.
c. The teacher will place a completed anchor chart on the front board next to the
PowerPoint on inherited and learned traits.
d. The teacher will pass out student versions of a blank anchor chart to the class.
e. The teacher will provide the students with pencils to complete the anchor chart.
f. The teacher will stand at the front of the room and begin the PowerPoint.
g. As the teacher goes through the slides, she will refer to the completed anchor
chart.
h. The students will follow along with the teacher and fill in their student anchor
chart.
i. Once the PowerPoint is over, the teacher will review the anchor chart with the
class to make sure theirs is correct.
j. The teacher will tell everyone that this anchor chart will be a tool for them to
use and it will not be turned in for a grade.
k. The teacher will then tell the class that they may use this anchor chart to help
them with the next activity, Inherited vs. Learned Traits Jeopardy.
2. Inherited vs. Learned Traits Jeopardy:
https://www.playfactile.com/inheritetraitslearned/play
a. The teacher will instruct the class to come up to the front carpet with their anchor
charts.
b. When all students have arrived on the carpet, the teacher will tell the class that they
are going to play “Inherited vs. Learned Traits Jeopardy.”
c. The teacher will then ask the students if they have every played Jeopardy before.
d. Before they are split in to two teams, the teacher will explain the rules to the class.
1. There are going to be two teams.
2. Each team takes turns picking a question by category and dollar amount.
3. When they click the category, a trait will come up.
4. The students must determine if this trait is leaned or inherited.
5. If the team answers the question correctly, someone from the group will click
on the checkmark next to their team’s character. The money will automatically
go in the bank.
6. If the group gets the question wrong, click on the X next to the team’s
character. The money will be subtracted from the bank.
7. The team at the end with the most money wins the game.
e. The winning team will receive a homework pass that they can use with any
assignment. This will be the motivation to keep the students interacting the entire
time.
f. This activity is totally student centered. The teacher will sit at the desk as the
students work with one another to complete the game. While the teacher observes
the students, the teacher will use a checklist to assess student understanding and
misconceptions to address after the activity is over.
g. The teacher then has the students return to their desks and review any missed
questions and misconceptions.
3. Paddle Review
a. The teacher will give each student two teacher made paddles.
b. The first paddle says, “inherited trait” and the second says “learned trait.”
c. The teacher will give random examples of each trait.
d. The student will hold up the sign that says the correct trait name.
e. When all of the examples are completed, the teacher will collect the paddles.
1. Trait #1: Blonde Hair-Inherited
2. Trait #2: Blue Eyes-Inherited
3. Trait #3: Having your ears pierced-Learned
4. Trait #4: How tall you are-Inherited
5. Trait #5: What type of music you like- Learned
4. Formative Assessment: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Inherited-Trait-
or-Learned-Behavior-Activity-4371069).
a. The teacher stands in front of the class and shows the students the worksheet they
will be completing.
1. This worksheet is an “Inherited vs. Learned Behavior” activity.
2. There are sixteen different traits on this worksheet.
3. The students will look at the picture as well as the phrase and decide if this trait
is inherited or learned.
4. The student will write their answer on the line below the picture.
5. When the students are done, they flip their paper over, so the teacher knows
they are finished.
6. When everyone has completed the worksheet, the teacher will walk around and
collect them.
b. This worksheet will serve as a formative assessment for the teacher to see the
understanding of the content.
c. An assessment scale will be used to determine the proficiency of the student.
d. The teacher will then have every student put their pencils away and look up front.
Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
1. As a brief closure, the teacher will ask the students if they have any questions.
2. If the students do not ask questions, the teacher will review any misconceptions from
the lesson.
3. The teacher will then introduce the lesson for the next day.
a. The teacher will pull up a picture of kids with earrings on to introduce the
Day 3 lesson.
b. The teacher will ask the student if it is an inherited trait or a learned trait.
c. The students will say “learned trait.”
d. The teacher will then say that the class is going to dive into “learned traits”
tomorrow.
Accommodations/Differentiation:

Anchor Chart/PowerPoint: Students who are visually impaired will receive a large text
PowerPoint to look at while they are at their desk.

Jeopardy Accommodation: Students who do not want to participate in the game, can watch
their peers and write down examples to refer to in the future.

Formative Assessment Accommodation: Instead of the student writing “inherited” or

“learned” on the line, the words would be provided, and they would circle the correct answer.
