Week Two Math

This document provides a lesson plan for teaching students to count from 1 to 120. The lesson will take place over four days. On the first day, students will play a game called Five in a Row to practice identifying numbers from 1 to 100 and covering them on a hundred chart. The teacher will observe students and assess their number identification skills. The following days will include additional activities to build students' procedural fluency and conceptual understanding of counting, though the specific tasks and procedures are not described. The goal is for students to learn counting skills that are useful in everyday life.

Blueprint for Building Coherent Math Lessons

Bridging To Practice
Big Idea(s)(EUs): Essential Question(s):
● Numbers and counting are part of our everyday life. ● What are different ways to count?

Content Standard(s): Math Practice(s):

● 1.NBT.A.1: Extend counting sequence (120). ● Model with mathematics
○ 1.NBT.B.2, 1.NBT.B.3 (supporting standards - will be explicitly ● Use appropriate tools strategically
taught later in year) ● Attend to precision

Learning Intentions: Success Criteria:

● We are learning to count forward and backward from any ● I can count forward.
number. ● I can count backward.
● We are learning to read and write numbers from 1 - 120. ● I can count starting with a number other than 1.
● I can read and write numbers 1 - 120.

Purpose:
❏ Conceptual Understanding
✓ Procedural Fluency (Monday - Wednesday)
✓ Transfer (Thursday)

Misconceptions:
● Lack one-to-one correspondence
● You always start with 1
● Skipping/recounting objects in a group
● Patterns in early counting sequence apply to all numbers (ten, 1 teen, 2 teen…)
Math Routine (Lesson Launch)
● Teach math routine: What Do You Know About the Number? (a number between 1 & 100)

Facilitate
Materials:
● Chart paper, markers, hundred charts, cubes, number cards (1 - 100) or iPads - number generator

Procedures:
● Introduce and model the game, Five in a Row.
Monday ○ Students will receive a hundred chart, cubes, and number cards.
08/06/18 ○ They will pick a card, identify the number, and then cover it with one of their cubes.
○ The first person to cover five numbers in a row is the winner.
● Students will play the game with a partner while the teacher conferences or pulls groups to work on counting and number recognition.

Closure
● Discuss how knowing numbers will help us in everyday life.

Formative Assessment:
● Observation/Notes (recording sheet)
○ Are students able to identify numbers between 1 - 100?
