TOPIC 1: HUMAN BODY

Topic objectives
At the end of this topic, learners should be able to:
 identify and name parts of the human body.
 discuss the functions of the different parts of the human body.
 care for their body parts.
 differentiate between males and females.

UNIT 1: MY BODY
Teaching notes
Different body parts
For young learners around this age, they are expected to learn about internal and external
body parts.
You have to show them diagram of both internal and external body parts.
The external body parts which they are supposed to know are:
 head
 eyes
 nose
 ears
 hand
 leg
 foot
The internal body parts which they are supposed to know are:
 intestines
 heart
 stomach
 lungs
Different sexes of human being
 Human beings have two sexes, so let children know their sexes.
 Let each learner introduce himself or herself and highlighting his or her own sex.
Functions of body parts
Learners must know the functions of their different body parts, at this level, they must know
the functions of their external body parts. You have to teach them how best they can take
good care of their body parts.
Activity 1
For the activity to be interesting, you can bring a mirror to the class and make turns for
children to look into the mirror. Afterwards let them shout the body parts they have seen in
the mirror after you instruction to do so.

Activity 2
Learners are supposed to do this activity in small groups. They have to name all their
classmates and differentiate boys and girls from their list.
Exercise 1
1. Themba is a boy.
2. Nomsa is a girl.
Activity 3
Help the learners to sing the song, you can translate it to their own vernacular language. As
they sing they must touch the body parts they will be mentioning.
Exercise 2
The learner must match the body part and its function correctly.
Activity 4
Learners must demonstrate the brushing of teeth. You have to demonstrate it first then they
can copy.

UNIT 2 :HEALTH AND SAFETY


TOPIC OBJECTIVES
By the end of the topic ,learners should be able to;
a) Identify hazards within their emmediate environment
b) Discus risks of being in a hazardous area
c) Discus what a safe play area should be like
d) Formulate rules that make them play safely
TEACHING NOTES
SAFETY
Teacher uses the classroom and immediate environment to as learners identify
hazardous objects
Charts and pictures with different hazardous environments and scenarios can
also be used
Teacher probes questions on dangers of learning and living in an unsafe
environment
With the help of the facilitator , learners formulate rules that will make them
play safely in and outside the class
They also pick papers around the school and dispose into a rubbish bin or pit
School rule chart can also be read to learners so as to enforce cleanliness
ACTIVITY 1
Leaners name dangerous objects they see at home
Learners identify dangerous objects at school, pictures and charts can be used
Learners name dangerous objects at the play centre
EXERCISE 1
Facilitator prepares a chart with pictures of different hazardous and safe
environments
Learners fill in the missing letters of the words

UNIT 3 :HEALTH
Learners should be able to
a) explain why it is important for them to exercise
b) name activities that they do during their physical education lessons
c) identify good and bad food
d) discus how the take care of their bodies (hygiene)
Teaching notes
Pictures of good and bad food
Pictures with different scenarios , one family eating good food , the other family
eating bad food
Facilitator explains the importance of bathing
Bring a bucket with water , soap and a towel
Learners may be instructed to demonstrate washing their faces
Tooth brushes , tooth paste or salt, vasselline, hair comb to be shown to learners
and they discus how these items are used

Discus what they see from the picture

Group the learners into smaller manageable groups


Give them workcards
Let them name items they see in the pictures
Discus uses of the items they named

TOPIC 3 :BALANCES
UNIT 4 : BALANCING ON DIFFERENT POINTS
Objectives
By the end of the topic learners should be able to
a) balance on different body parts
b) make different body shapes
c) balance on their partners
d) balance on apparatus

Teaching notes
Facilitators should make sure that the have adequate material before
teaching balances
Equipment to include gymnastics mats for safety is the number one
priority when teaching gymnastics
Learners should always practice in the presence of the facilitator
It is also important to ensure that there is a first aid kit and first aiders at
school incase of an accident
Other resource material to be used may include equipment in the ECD
Centre , hooler hoops ,old tyres ,balls ,cones, whistle
Leaners should not hold on for too long in a balance, allow them to rest a
bit and recover
Use the command teaching method to ensure safety
Seek the assistance of a resource person if not sure

ACTIVITY 1
Facilitator gives coaching points to one volunteer learner
Coaching points on balancing on the back
From back balance learners can push their legs further up till they are
balancing on their shoulders
Support the balance using both hands

ACTIVITY 2
Learners are given coaching points to balance on two legs and one hand
Coaching points ( 3 POINT BALANCE)
a) legs shoulder width apart (body balance)
b) open your legs a bit wider
c) bend down and touch the ground on one hand
d) fully stretch your body and your other hand by your side
e) face the teacher and smile
On 4 point balancing just drop the other hand and touch the ground
Learners should fully extend their hands and legs for beauty

ACTIVITY 3
Learners come up with balances of their own choice
As a facilitator advocate for variety but remember safety
Encourage them to balance on 1 and 2 points ie head stand or standing on one
leg

Learners answer given questions, facilitator may give different questions
depending on how they taught

Topic 4 :LOCCOMOTION /MOVEMENT
By the end of the topic learners should be able to
a) follow the facilitators instruction and move from one point to another
b) Use different apparatus to move from one point to another
c) Move from one point to another in response to stimuli

TEACHING NOTES
Facilitator to use equipment such as skipping ropes, hula hoops, drums ,whistle,
jingles, tyres, gymnastic mats ,speaker boxes with recorded music, drum
majorites team may showcase to the school
Use cones to mark the area in use and all learners must be within the marked
area
Facilitator may also show the class different videos with different locomotion
styles
A resource person from other classes may come and demonstrate

UNIT:5 ELEMENTARY MOVEMENT

ACTIVITY ONE
Facilitator instructs learners to,
a) Hop within a demarcated area
b) Jog
c) Run
d) walk like a baboon
e) roll like a log

EXERCISE 1
Learners answer the given questions

MOVEMENT IN RESPONSE TO STIMULI
Facilitator brings in the component of music
Drums , recorded music , shakers , tambourine , guitar, speaker boxes may be
used as a source of music
Learners can move in response to clapping of hands by the teacher or blowing
of the whistle
Learners can be shown videos on movement in response to music
Drummies may showcase how they march and move in response to stimuli

TOPIC 5 :COORDINATION
By the end of the topic learners should be able to:
a) execute movement in a sequence with ease
b) link weight bearing and weight transfer
c) perform different tasks at varied speeds
TEACHING NOTES
Leaners can play aiming games , improvised darts by drawing different shapes
on the wall and instruct them to hit the wall using a low pressure tennis ball for
safety reasons
Learners may play bouncing games using tennis balls or smaller hand balls
Nhodo can be utilized for hand eye coordination
Learners may also be instructed to change over from one balance to another for
example from the head stand they form a bridge from that balance they do a
shoulder stand and lastly roll like a log

ACTIVITY ONE
One learner aims at a ring (shooting) and the other one picks the ball and throws
at a learner who has to run back to the shooting square
Each learner is given 3 chances to practice the drill

UNIT 6 :ELEMENTARY SKILLS OF COORDINATION
