HW 4

This document describes a helium liquefaction system and provides operating conditions to simulate it. The system receives high-pressure helium vapor, liquefies some, and returns the rest. It gives equations relating temperature, enthalpy, mass flow rates, and heat transfer to solve for the unknown values. Solving the equations provides the temperatures at various points in the system as t2 = 7.316 K, t7 = 5.974 K, and t8 = 10.93 K, with mass flow rate and enthalpy values for the intermediate points as well.

HW 4

A helium liquefier operating according to the flow diagram shown in the Fig. below
receives high-pressure helium vapor, liquefies a fraction of the vapor, and returns the
remainder to be recycled. The following operating conditions prevail:

Point 1 (vapor entering warm side of heat exchanger), T = 15 K, h = 78.3 kJ/kg,

w = 5 g/s, P = 2000 kPa

Point 5 (vapor leaving turbine), T = 8 K, h = 53 kJ/kg, w = 4 g/s

Separator, P = 100 kPa, saturation temperature at 100 kPa = 4.2 K, h f = 10 kJ/kg, h

g = 31 kJ/kg

Heat exchanger, UA = 100 W/K

Specific heat of helium vapor:

cp = 6.4 kJ/ (kg . K) at 2000kPa

5.8 kJ/ (kg . K) at 100 kPa

Simulate this system, determining the values of w4 , T2 , T7, and T8 .

Solution 4

Cp , high pressure = 6.4 kj/kgk

cp , low pressure = 5.8 kj/kgk

equations

1 heat balance 5-6-7 4 g/s * 53 kj/kg + 5 - w4 * 31 = 9 -w4 * h7

2 heat balance , separator 5 g/s * h2 = w4 * 10 kj/kg + 5-w4 * 31 kj/kg

3 Relation of h2 and t2 h2= 78.3 - 6.4 ( 15- t2 )

4 relation of h7 and t7 h7 = 31.0 + 5.8 ( t7-4.2)

5 heat balance about heat exchanger
