RESEARCH
MAXIMIZING TOEIC READING SCORE

CHAPTER 1:
INTRODUCTION
1. Background
As a matter of fact, English is a very popular language in the world. In
2002, English was the third common language in the world and was the
native language of four hundred and two millions people. A number of
students in Vietnam pursue English as their major. To standadize the
quality of English for English major students, many universities in
Vietnam consider TOEIC certificate a requirement to graduate. At
Lachong University, English major students have to get TOEIC 750
points.

2. Rationale
750 TOEIC score certificate is not only a graduating requirement for
students but also a good point in the resume for candidates who want to
apply for a good job or lead to higher positions. When Vietnam joins the
international market, English is necessary because many developed
countries use English as a business language. With a TOEIC 750 score
certificate, employers will highly appreciate candidates’ using English
skill in their responsibilities. Therefore, TOEIC certificate is an important
requirement for university graduates and job appliers.

3. Problem statement
Understanding the importance of TOEIC certificate, students or
candidates have to be aware of how to do a TOEIC test effectively. In
fact, a TOEIC test is devided into 2 parts: reading and listening. This
research will focus on the Reading test of a TOEIC test with 2 aims need
to be carried out:
• Describing the format of 3 parts in TOEIC Reading test.
• Collecting some techniques to increase the TOEIC Reading score.
4. Limitations
As for time constraint, the author of this research would like to focus on
the limitations as below:
• This research focuses on only TOEIC Reading test.
• The research will be carried out at Lachong University. Therefore, to have
the exact results for thr research, the author of this research will limit the
number of students for the case of the survey: 150 junior and senior
students of English department of Lachong University. Some of students
may not cooperate in answering those questionnaires, so the possible
number of participants could be 125.

5. Benefits of the study

The purpose of the study is to help improving and even maximizing the
TOEIC Reading score. It means that the whole test score will be improved
positively.

6. Research methodology
To gain the dept – knowledge and practical results in this research, it is
sufficient to use quantitive method and quanlitative method.

a. Primary data collection

A survey will be conducted to junior and senior English major students of
LHU. The questionnaires aim to the understanding of students about the
TOEIC Reading tests, skills and habits they use in doing the tests and
factors that cause an uneffective test.

b. Secondary data collection

This data is collected from previous successful researchers and even from
published books to make the research more convincing and solid.
7. Sample size
The sample students are in the year 2008 and 2009 of English department
of LHU. The questionnaire will be given to 150 students. The feedback
from these students will strongly affect the success of this research
because they may experience TOEIC practice tests organized in LHU to
lead to the real test. Thus, they have the particular inderstanding about the
content and the requirements of the TOEIC Reading test.
CHAPTER 2:
LITERATURE REVIEW

In second language, reading plays a significant role. Reading helps

learners to get more knowledge as well as improve writing skill and
grammar. According to International Research Journal of Finance and
Economics (2010), “reading is an activity, which involves
comprehension and interpretation of ideas symbolized by written and
printed pages” and “reading is receiving communication. It is making the
discriminative responses to graphics symbols. It is decoding graphic
symbols.”

If the learners get trouble with reading, it means that the learners also get
big trouble with examinations in which reading tests occupy half of the
whole test score like TOEIC.In order to help candidates in TOEIC
examinations, this study is a reference to reduce the pressure of Reading
test.

In fact, candidates always feel difficult in Reading test because they do

not respect the uesfulness of reading strategies which are taught in class.

There are 3 parts in an TOEIC Reading test:

- In part 5 and 6, candidates have to select the best answer to complete

the sentence. These parts ask candidates to have good grammar and the
proficinecy of speech of words.

- To asnwer well questions after reading selection of texts, it is suitable

for candidates to use skimming and scanning to get main ideas and get
details.
Besides, pre-reading and summarizing also give a general picture of a
particular problem. It is because students usually focus on new words
when they read a text. This causes difficulties in understading the content
of the text. Reality shows that having basic information and summarizing
the text support students to answer some questions they have already
known firstly or even guess the correct answers with high rate.

All thoughts above are just suitable for TOEIC Reading test. Candidates
cannot use them to get high mark in TOEIC Listening test.

As the requrement of training well – skilled students, LHU considers

TOEIC certificate a tool to evaluate students. This study not only useful
for LHU students but also for people who intend to participate in the
examination of TOEIC.
CHAPTER 3:
METHODOLOGY

1. Sources of study
- Articles
- Books
- Questionnaire

2. Methodology
In ways to do the methodology, Cohen, Manion and Morrison (2001) said
that surveys are the helpful way to collect data of existing conditions
naturally. In addition, Johnson and Nunan (1992) also affirm more
particularly that it is suitable for researchers to use surveys to gather
wider results in linguistic studies.

Questionnaire contained 2 kinds of question: closed-questions and open-

questions. With closed-questions, responders will choose their option on a
rating scale (Likert, 1932). The other kind of questionnaire, opened-
questions, asked responders to express their thought or comment by using
their own words (Fasold, 1984:192). Mixing of both 2 kinds of
questionnaire will help the author collect and analyze the responders’
options and get more solid and accurate answer.

150 junior and senior English major students of LHU will participate this
study. Their experience in doing TOEIC parctice tests is the reference for
the author to create some useful strategies to pass the reading test
effectively.
