z−a w+a
1. Let φa (z) = 1−az ∈ Aut(∆). Verify its inverse function is φ−a (w) = 1+aw
. (Hint:
to verify φ−a ◦ φa (z) = z for any z.)
Solution: It needs to verify φ−a ◦ φa (z) = z for any z. In fact,
z−a
φa (z) + a 1−az
+a z − |a|2 z
φ−a ◦ φa (z) = = z−a = = z.

1. Show: f (z) = x2 + iy 2 satisfies the Cauchy-Riemann equation at the origin,
but is not holomorphic in any neighborhood of 0.
Solution: ∂u∂x
= 2x, ∂v
∂y
= 2y, ∂u
∂y
∂v
= 0, ∂x = 0. Then ∂u
∂x
= ∂v
∂y
and ∂u
∂y
∂v
= − ∂x hods at 0
but not in any neighborhoood of 0.
2. Let f (z) = x2 + axy + by 2 + i(cx2 + dxy + y 2). What kind of values for the
constants a, b, c, d, should we take so that f is holomorphic on C?

Solution: Write u(x, y) = x2 + axy + by 2 and v(x, y) = cx2 + dxy + y 2. Then

∂u ∂u ∂v ∂v
= 2x + ay, = ax + 2by, = 2cx + dy, = dx + 2y.
∂x ∂y ∂x ∂y
They satisfy the Cauchy-Riemann equation if and only if
2x + ay = dx + 2y, 2cx + dy = −ax − 2by
which gives a = 2, b = −1, c = −1 and d = 2. In this case, f is holomorphic on C.
3. If f (z) is a holomorphic function with u(x, y) = 2(x − 1)y, f (2) = −i. Find
f (z) by consideration of the Cuachy-Riemann equation.

Solution: Since
f ′ (z) = ux + ivx = ux − iuy = 2y − 2i(x − 1) = −2i(x + iy) + 2i = −2i(z − 1),
we find f (z) = −i(z −1)2 +c. Since f (2) = −i, it gives c = 0 so that f (z) = −(z −1)2 i.

1. At which z the function f (z) = z−1
is holomorphic?

Solution: At any point z 6= 1, since f (z) has a power series centered at z, f is

analytic and hence is holomorphic.
