Before Getting Started...
Hello! My name is Dylan Laine and I will
be guiding you through this fourteen-
week course. I am so glad you're here!
At the bottom of each lesson, you will
find a link titled, "Click To View Video."
The link will take you to a YouTube
video that dives deeper into the lesson.
NOTE: Links will work when you are
viewing this e-book on a computer. On
a mobile device or tablet, you will need

WEEK ONE
Lesson One: Sitting At The Piano
1 Sit on the front half of
your bench or chair. 2 Adjust the keyboard
stand or bench height.
3 Keys should be
elbow-height. 4 Rest your hands on
the keys.
5 Elbows should rest in
front of your stomach. 6 Adjust your bench if
needed for #4.
7 Loosen your wrists,
straighten your back. 8 Keep your feet flat on
the ground or stool.

Lesson Four: Finding Middle C
C D E F
Where Is Middle C?
On the piano, each key has a specific
note name. Black keys occur in groups
of two and three, and each white key
directly to the left of two black keys is a
C note. On an 88-key keyboard, middle
C is the fourth C from the left. On a 76-
key, 61-key, and 49-key keyboard, it is
the third C from the left.

the alphabet starts

Lesson Six: White Piano Keys
C D E F G A B
White Piano Keys
C is a white piano key directly to the left
of two black keys. If we ascend using
white keys, the musical alphabet tells us
which note comes next. For example, D is
the white key above C. E is the white key
above D, and so on. These notes are
referred to as "natural" because they
are neither "sharp" nor "flat." We will
learn more about sharps and flats in
lessons seven and eight.

What Is A Sharp?
A sharp (written as "#") note is one
key above the natural version of itself.
For example, C# is the black key
immediately to the right of a C natural.
