RFID BASED AUTOMATED FUEL DISPENSING STATION 1

INTRODUCTION

The increase in the number of vehicles in India in recent years led to the congestions and traffic
jams in almost all cities of India. The dispensing of the fuel to this huge number of vehicles at
the fuel stations has caused many complications in India. The vehicle driver has to pay for fuel
with cash money and may have to pay more than the amount of dispensed fuel due to the lack
of small money change available with station operator.

RFID Based Automated Fuel Dispensing Station, is to reduce human work and develop an
auto-guided mechanism and to implement the task sequentially by using RFID technology.
These systems are highly reliable and less time-consuming devices. The components used in
this project are 8051 Microcontroller, RFID tags, Power supply, an LCD display, a Motor
driver and an RFID reader.

Fuel products are one of the valuable and rare creations of the nature. The proper use and
distribution is an important task to survive these products. A fuel station is a facility which sells
fuel and lubricants via fuel dispensers or otherwise called borrowers which themselves are used
to pump gasoline, Diesel, etc. into vehicles and to calculate the financial cost of the product
thus dispensed. Enterprises engaged in urban and suburban public transport as well as other
transport enterprises big fuel consumers, need control of fuel delivery to prevent or at least
minimize the misuse of the fuel.

The emergency of radio frequency technology has changed the traditional methods of data
collection. Compared to the traditional bar code, magnetic card and IC cards, RFID tags have
the features of non-contact, reading speed, no wear, long life, user friendly and the security
function. The use of RFID for vehicle identification, toll collection, traffic management have
already been experimented with extensively. This paper proposes the implementation of RFID
technology in controlling fuel dispensing for an Indian city.

OBJECTIVE: -

 The aim of the project is to design a system which is capable of automatically deducting
the amount of Fuel dispensed from user card based on RFID technology.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

 Cekerevac Z. et al. (2006) proposed RFID Based Fuel Dispensing System in Chennai.
This paper presents a Fuel Dispensing System Based on RFID Technology. It prevents
unauthorized fuelling by assigning a specific fuel for registered vehicle, depending on
their types. It uses EM18 RFID Reader with its passive tax. The hardware consists of
Microcontroller, Relay, LCD, Speaker module and ZigBee Transmitter and Transceiver
for car unit and it is attached to conventional solenoid valve in order to make them work
under the RFID Technology. [6]
 Jaska P. et al. (2010) proposed to eliminate this human interaction so that there is no
need of workers to fill the fuel; In general, a smart card is an integrated circuit card with
memory capable of making decisions. The smart card contains an
AT89C51microcontroller, a voltage regulator, serial cable connections, and an LED
which glows whenever a card is inserted into the reader and also it glows whenever it
issues any command or receives any command. [5]
 Jadhav A.H et al. (2014) proposed a control system based on RFID technology to
monitor the supply and dispensing of vehicle fuel in Baghdad. The system consists of
RFID readers attached to fuel dispensers and pumps, and RFID tags assigned to the
vehicles and the trucks used for delivering fuel to the fuel stations. A hardware part is
connected to conventional fuel dispensers and machines, located at both the stations
and the fuel refineries or depots, which makes them work under the control of the RFID
system, without the need to rebuild new dispensers. [1]
 Edward O.O et al. (2014) proposed a Web Based Monitoring System that enables
effective monitoring of fuel station output and sales volume from distributed fuel
stations under the domain of single company / organization. Remote Monitoring
Technology as a vast research field with numerous application areas incorporating
various data collation techniques and sensor network can be applied to provide
information relating to fuel station status in distributed fuel stations reliably. Thus the
proposed system relies on a Microcontroller, Keypad and Pump to demonstrate the
traditional fuel dispenser. [4]

 Srinivasan Karthik et al. (2015) proposed an ideology to compensate for the

exorbitant consumption of automotive fuel and indirectly encourage travel by means of
public transport and / or car pulling. Here a transparent and egalitarian system for fuel
distribution and regulation is introduced. The majority of the system construction and
implementation is in fuel /diesel dispensing unit, where-in there is an application
processor connected to a cloud database containing pertinent details regarding fuel
consumption of every automobile owner who has officially registered himself / herself
to this modified system. Upon registration, a fuel – limit – per – month is established
for the particular user. For data retrieving and manipulation in real time, RFID
Technology is chosen. [2]

WORK PLAN AND METHODOLOGY

The project is implementing as an RFID-based Fuel Dispensing Station. Users use RFID card:
Petro Card with RFID tags including user verification codes. These cards can be recharged at
the recharge points. When a user swipes the card through the RFID reader, it senses the amount
entered by the user and delivers fuel to the vehicle. Therefore, the amount will be deducted
automatically from the user card and the LCD display shows the amount and details of the user.

The microcontroller stores several cards details and compares the data given by the RFID
reader. When both these details match, it sends the control signals to the relay such that the
motor operates to station fuel.

The system proposed states three simple uses of RFID smart cards. Among these two cards are
known and the rest is unknown. When the customer comes to fill the fuel at the station, firstly
he will swipe the card. If the card is authorized, RFID card reader will accept the card. Then it
will ask for the pin number. If entered pin number by the customer is correct then it will ask
for the amount for the fuel to be dispensed. In such a way system works.

If the customer swipes with unauthorized card, then the reader will display the error message
as the card is unauthorized. In such a way the system is secured. This system does not require
any high performance micro-controller such as ARM series. It is some using low cost micro-
controller which indirectly reduces the cost of the total system.

ADVANTAGES: -

1. Man power is reduced because of automated self-service.

2. Due to use of RFID system robbery of the fuel is avoided.
3. Real time authentication system.
4. The time is saved.
5. Low power consumption.
6. Accuracy in the amount of fuel dispensed.
7. Highly sensitive.
8. Long life.

Estimated Cost: -
 Around Twelve Thousand Rupees.

Applications: -
Liquid dispensing systems are quite commonly used in different places like offices, Bus stands,
Railway stations, Fuel station etc.

Future Aspects: -
First of all the fuel station with our technology can be possible to operate all the time without
help of manpower, in this project there will be a centralized server having the database of the
customer like Customer Name, Card No, after paying the cash the balance can be increased
and depending upon the use of the card for purchase of Fuel the balance will be deducted.
