Background of the Study

Speaking is being capable of speech, expressing or exchanging

thoughts through using language. "Speaking is a productive aural/oral skill

and it consists of producing systemic verbal expression to convey meaning”

Nunan, 2003). Speaking effectively is defined as speaking in such a way that

your message is clearly heard and, if possible, acted upon. There are two

main elements to speaking effectively: what you say, and how you say it.

Speaking comes with knowledge and confidence. It allows children to improve

their communication skills, stage presentation and the delivery.

Reading and Listening plays an important role in speaking. Reading is

one of the most effective ways of foreign language; it is simply the

interpretation of the written message (Walter R. Hill, 1979). Listening provides

input that can be very significant for second language acquisition in general

and for the development of the speaking skill in particular.

This study aims to find out if the reading and listening comprehension

marks an effect on the speaking abilities of the students. The students

involved are the Senior High Students in University of Mindanao. This paper,

through the effects of the reading and listening comprehension, students will

use this method to help them improve and develop their speaking ability.

Listening is one of the ways to get information. As Brown says listening

is an activity to put the information the people have heard. According to

Field listening is a skill which impacts in specific ways upon the

classroom context in general and upon in individual learner in

particular.1Listening is assuming greater and greater importance in

foreign language classrooms. Rost as quoted by David Nunan stated

that listening is vital in the language, because it provides input for the

learner. Rrom the definitions above, it can be concluded that the

students have information from listening that makes them prepare

before they are reading something or conversation. In other words,

listening becomes a greater important skill in foreign language

classroom. Students can get knowledge and understand about the

language by listening.

It means that listening is an important skill for students especially in

teaching and learning process. By listening something, they get the

important information from electronic media or someone.

According to MOHAMMAD BAGHER SHABANI 2013, Speaking is a

fundamental and yet demanding skill to be mastered by learners of

Engludh as a foreign language or EFL. Compared to other language

skills speaking has been given less attention in second language has

alsays been considered the most demanding skill to develop in the

learners of the target language compared to such other skills as

listening, reading, and writing.

Panabo College. It also aims to show the importance of and how listening and

reading comprehension would affect the speaking ability of a students. The

purpose of the study is to answer the following questions:

1. What is the importance of speaking ability to students?

2. How can listening and reading comprehension affect the speaking

ability of the students? What is the relationship of listening and reading

comprehension to speaking ability?

Abridged Methodology

There will be 10 respondents in every section of Grade 11 in the

University of Mindanao. The research instruments will be using the

questionnaires, tests, structured interview schedules and checklists. The test

consists of questions that are answerable by yes or no. The first step before

going to the testing proper is to make a request letter. Upon approval, the

researcher retrieves the request letter. The Principal, as well as class adviser

and other faculty members were selected in the Administration. In

administering the questionnaire, the researcher was use the time allotted for

vacant to avoid distractions of class discussions. The student responses were

given enough time to answer the question. After the data gathering, the

researcher now collected it for tallying the scores and to apply the statistical

treatment to be used with the study
