Assignment - 1 - 05-02-2020

The document is an assignment on wave motion from the Department of Physics at Patna Women's College. It contains 7 questions about various topics in wave motion, including defining transverse and longitudinal waves, deriving equations for plane progressive waves, particle and wave velocity, energy of waves, and solving problems involving wave equations. The document also provides brief definitions and examples of waves, pulses, transverse waves, and longitudinal waves. It notes that waves carry energy through a medium without transporting matter.

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS

PATNA WOMEN’S COLLEGE

ASSIGNMENT – 1 [Semester – II]

WAVE MOTION

1. What do you understand by wave motion, transverse wave and longitudinal wave.

2. Explain travelling wave.

3. Derive the wave equation of plane progressive wave.

4. What do you understand by the particle velocity and wave velocity. Write the expression for maximum
particle velocity.

5. Derive the expression of kinetic energy, potential energy and total energy of plane progressive wave.

6. Derive differential equation of the wave motion.

7. A simple progressive wave is represented by the equation y=0.5 sin[314 t −12.56 x ]; where y and x
are expressed in meteres and t in seconds. Find (a) amplitude (b) wavelength (c ) speed of the wave (d )
frequency.

8. A wave is given by the equation

y=10 sin 2 π [ 100 t−0.02 x ] +10 sin 2 π [100 t+ 0.02 x ]

Find the velocity, maximum amplitude and loop length frequency of the stationary wave produced.

WAVE MOTION

The wave motion is defined as the propagation of a disturbance or perturbation. The wave carries energy

from one place to another but there is no transport of matter.

For example, when a stone is dropped in a pool of water, it creates disturbance (wave) which

propagates outwards. In this propagation water molecules do not move outward with the wave. If there is

a small floating object, it will move up and down near its own location, indicating that the water

molecules do not move along with the wave. For this disturbance to travel from one point of a medium to

another, the particles of the medium must be coupled to one another by some force so that the disturbance

created at one point can be handed down to its neighbors. A material medium is not necessary for

propagation of disturbance, if some physical property of space can exist in vacuum.

The disturbance which is over a short time is called pulse.

Simple example of the wave is a

Plane Transverse Wave

A wave in which the displacement of the particles is at right angles to the direction of propagation

of wave, is called plane transverse wave. e.g. light wave.

Longitudinal Wave

A wave motion in which the particles of the medium vibrate
