11. (12 points) Given the parametric equations

(
x(t) = 2 cos(3t) − 1
y(t) = 2 sin(3t) − 1
where t ∈ R.
(a) Write down an equation in x, y only to describe its locus.
(b) Sketch its graph. Be sure to indicate its direction of motion when t increases.
Soluton:
(a)
(x + 1)2 + (y + 1)2 = (2 cos(3t))2 + (2 sin(3t))2
= 22 (cos2 (3t) + sin2 (3t))
= 22 .
Thus the locus is a circle centred at (−1, −1) with radius 2.
(b) The graph is as follow.

12. (16 points) Consider the function

|2 − x|
 if x < 0;
f (x) = 3 if x = 0;

 x
2 +1 if x > 0.

Without using L’Hôpital’s rule, evaluate the following limits. Furthermore, if the
limit does not exist but diverges to ±∞, please indicate so and determine the correct
sign.

(a) lim f (x);

x→1

(b) lim+ f (x);

x→0

(c) lim− f (x);

x→0

(d) lim f (x).

x→0

Solution:

(a) lim f (x) = lim (2x + 1) = 21 + 1 = 3;

x→1 x→1

(b) lim+ f (x) = lim+ (2x + 1) = 20 + 1 = 2;

x→0 x→0

(c) lim− f (x) = lim− |2 − x| = |2 − 0| = 2;

x→0 x→0

(d) Since lim+ f (x) = lim− f (x) = 2, lim f (x) exists and lim f (x) = 2.
x→0 x→0 x→0 x→0

13. (12 points) Without using L’Hôpital’s rule, evaluate the following limits. Further-
more, if the limit does not exist but diverges to ±∞, please indicate so and determine
the correct sign.

(a) √ √
lim ( x2 + 3x − x2 − 5);
x→∞

(b) √
x2 + x − 1
lim p ;
x→−∞ 3x − 3 |x|3 + 1

(c)  x sec x

x→ π2 − tan x + 1

Solution:

x→∞
√ √
√ √ x 2 + 3x + x2 − 5
= lim ( x2 + 3x − x2 − 5) √ √
x→∞ x2 + 3x + x2 − 5
(x2 + 3x) − (x2 − 5)
= lim √ √
x→∞ x2 + 3x + x2 − 5
3x + 5
= lim √ √
