STATEMENT OF
PURPOSE

‘Research’ is the quest for truth and the desire to know. It is triggered by
intuition and creativity and is accomplished by hard work. ‘Engineering’ is the
integration of ingenuity and common sense to make impossible things probable.
Through graduate studies in Chemical Engineering I intend to bring a confluence
of my propensity towards research and my strong engineering fundamentals. The
field of Petroleum, where engineering principles are applied to rugged
complexities of oil exploration and production fascinates me.

Chemical Engineering is one of the most versatile branches of engineering. To

apply my knowledge of Chemical Engineering in the fields of bioprocess
engineering, complex fluid flow phenomena, lab experimentations and computer
application would be an exciting and challenging task for me.

The intriguing course at UICT (Formerly known as UDCT) coupled with an equal
emphasis on lab work and the intellectually stimulating atmosphere created by
our faculty members spurred me to reach for higher levels of technical
excellence. My good academic record exemplifies my efforts. I have consistently
been in the top 10% of my class and my six-semester average of 74% marks
gives a clear idea of my academic competency. I am amongst the top 5%
students to secure the highest marks in most core chemical engineering
subjects including- Fluid Flow and Heat transfer, Environmental Engineering and
Pollution Control, Chemical Reaction Engineering & Chemical Engineering
Laboratory I and II

My Industrial training experiences at Asian Paints India Limited, India’s largest

decorative and automotive paint industry brought me face to face with the whole
gamut of state of the art research and scale-up techniques. My project involved
identifying the reasons for Material and Energy Losses in the Paint House. We
conducted in depth search for a period of 1-½ months to identify the losses and
suggested corrective measures at various stages of paint manufacturing. My
suggestions to the company were highly appreciated.

I strongly believe that academic proficiency should be accompanied by an overall

personality development. Knowledge acquired from theory is futile unless applied
practically. I have participated actively in technical team competitions demanding
creative designing abilities, literature surveys, a strong commitment and most
importantly good teamwork, all of which contribute to an ideal research aptitude. I
am confident that pursuing graduate studies, with an academic aim of obtaining a
doctorate, will further help hone my abilities and refine my personality.

My constant interactions with the faculty members during my undergraduate

studies have helped me identify certain research avenues:

 Biomolecular & Bioprocess Engineering: The exploitation of living

organisms of their components to create products and processes, with the clear
advantage of clean, efficient & safe technology is very attractive. My strong
background of chemical engineering will help me advance in this field. The
desire to delve deeper into the subject persuaded me to take the elective course
in Biochemical Engineering and my home paper topic on “Design of 50 TPA
plant for the production of Rosiglitazone” in final year of Chemical
Engineering will thrust me into the detailed aspects of the subject.
 Alternative Fuels & Hazardous Waste Treatment: This is an area that has
captivated me with its myriad of advantages. With the growing concern for
Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) the research in this field has gained
importance. I have presented a seminar on “Cobalt Catalyst Recovery from
Waste Aqueous Steams” under the guidance of Mrs. K.V. Marathe. Impetus for
this topic was created when I presented a poster on “Design Aspects of a Solar
Dryer” at International Workshop And Symposium on Industrial Drying
(IWSID) – 2004 in which I worked on detailed designing of a Solar Dryer.
 Fuid flow phenomena and phase behavior: My interest in Fluid
Mechanics has developed during my Momentum Transfer course in
UICT. The excellent application of Navier Stokes’ equations to fluid
flow to predict the flow behaviour in a specific geometry fascinates me.
I have gained distinction grades in both the courses of Momentum
Transfer in my third year of chemical engineering. I got an opportunity to
work on a seminar titled “Two phase flow and its industrial applications”
under the guidance of Mr. V. K. Rathod (Ch.E dept., UICT). I am
particularly interested in Computational Fluid Dynamics because it
enables a Chemical Engineer to see the problem before it happens.

Though I have mentioned my fields of interest, I would relish the opportunity of

exploring unknown avenues in this very vast discipline. My engineering
background has developed a flair for challenges in me and I am prepared to
meet the demands of this interesting and arduous course.

I desire to undergo the rigor and grind of research and emerge through as a
professional well equipped to productively utilize the technical skills either for
R & D or as a teaching member in the university. I believe that the State of Texas
and the University of Texas, Austin in particular would provide me just the right

platform to fulfill my dreams. Its research facilities and its highly distinguished
faculty make University of Texas, Austin one of the most highly rated institutes. I
am applying to the University as I am assured of getting high quality training and
experience. Also, the atmosphere of equality and freedom of thought, which
prevails in most American schools, would enable me to pursue my goals actively.
I am sure that, given any field, I can perform research of the highest quality and
contribute to the institute and the discipline in general.

I thank you for giving me an opportunity to express myself.
