TOPIC: TO BE VERB (IN PRESENT)

PART 1

As we said in the previous lesson, to be in past has only two forms along the conjugation which are was and
were. For example:

The form was is spelled w-a-s and were is spelled w-e-r-e. Therefore, behold its conjugation along the
subject pronouns below:

Positive Form Negative form Question

I was I was not or wasn’t Was I?


You were You were not Were you?
He was He was not Was he?
She was She was not Was she?
It was It was not Was it?
we were we were not Were we?
They were They were not Were they?

PART 2
Here are examples of some sentences with to be forms in the past.
 I was in Beira last week.
 They were at the market.
 Telma was happy yesterday .
 He wasn’t sick.

HOW DO WE MAKE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS USING TO BE IN PAST (Was or Were)?

To make questions using to be in past or present, we must start with the to be form (was or were) followed by
a subject. For example:

1. Were you at school yesterday?

 Yes, I was.
 No, I wasn’t.

2. Was he sick?

 Yes, he was.
 No, he was not. / wasn’t.
