Tutorial 7, 8, 9 - Road Estimate

1. The document provides three methods for estimating quantities of earthwork for road construction: the mid-sectional area method, mean sectional area method, and prismoidal formula method. 2. It includes examples of using each method to calculate earthwork quantities for portions of roads with given dimensions and height changes along the length. 3. The last part provides data to estimate the cost of earthwork for a 400m portion of road using the prismoidal formula method, given the formation width, side slopes, chainages, and height changes along the length.

METHOD 1. MID-SECTIONAL AREA METHOD

• Quantity = Area of mid-section x Length

• Let d1 and d2 be the height of bank at two ends portion of embankment, L the length of the section,
B the formation width and S:1 the side slope then,

• Area of mid-section = Area of rectangular portion + Area of two triangular portion

= Bdm+2(1/2 sdm^2 )=Bdm+sdm^2

Quantity of earthwork = (Bdm+sdm^2 )x L

3 4

METHOD 2. MEAN SECTIONAL AREA METHOD METHOD 3.PRISMOIDAL FORMULA METHOD

Quantity = Mean sectional area x Length • Quantity or Volume = L/6 (A1+A2+4Am)

• Where A1 and A2 are the cross-sectional areas at the two ends of a portion of embankment of a road of length L,
Sectional area at one end A1=Bd1+sd1^2 and Am is the mid-sectional area

• Let d1 and d2 be the heights of bank at two ends, and dm be the mean height at the mid-section, B be the
Sectional area at other end A2=Bd2+sd2^2 formation width and S:1 be the side slope.

• Cross-sectional area at one end A1=Bd1+sd1^2

d1 and d2 are heights or depth at the two ends
• Cross-sectional area at other end A2=Bd2+sd2^2
Mean sectional area A= (A1+A2) / 2
• Cross-section at middle dm= (d1+d2) / 2

Quantity Q= (A1+A2)/2 x Length

• Quantity = L/6 (A1+A2+4Am)

• The same is also applicable for cutting.

Example 1 Example 2

Calculate the quantity of earthwork for 200 metre length for a portion of a road in an uniform Calculate Qty. of Earthwork for Road Embankment with following details:
ground the heights of banks at the two ends being 1.00 m and 1.6 m. The formation width is
► Top width = 2m
10 metre and side slopes 2:1 (Horizontal : Vertical). Assume that there is no transverse slope.
► R.L. of Top of Bank = 103.00
Solution ► 2:1 on one side
Method I – Mid-Sectional Formula ► 2.5:1 for other side
B = 10m, S = 2, L = 200 m , d = dm = mean depth = (1+1.6)/2
Volume = (B*dm+ S*dm^2 ) x L = 3276 m^3
Use Prismoidal formula method
Method II – Mean Section Formula
A1 = Bd1+S*d1^2 A2 = Bd2+S*d2^2 Mean Sec Area = Am = (A1+A2)/2
Volume = Am * L = 3312 m^3

Method III – Prismoidal Formula

A1, A2 and Am.. V = L/6(A1+A2+4Am) = 3312 m^3
