Kaala Paani, the Cellular Jail situated in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands,
was a colonial prison. The Britishers used this prison especially to exile Indian
political prisoners. Many notable dissidents such as Batukeshwar Dutt and Veer
Savarkar and many more Indian freedom fighters were imprisoned here during the
struggle for India‟s independence.
The jail was called „Cellular Jail‟ as the solitary cells in the prison were
constructed in such a way that they prevented the prisoners from communicating
with each other. Also, the spokes were so designed that the face of a cell in a spoke
saw the back of the cells in another spoke. This made communication between
prisoners impossible and they were all left to die in solitary confinement. These
islands were so remote that they were the most suitable place to punish the rebels
many of whom died in its premises.
Two out of the seven wings of the jail were demolished during the short
(1942-1945) Japanese occupation of the island. After India became independent of
the British rule, another two wings of the jail were demolished and the remaining
three wings and the central tower were converted into a National Memorial in 1969.
The entire complex of the jail was converted into a national memorial monument.
