Students Notes

The document discusses Charles' law and how it relates volume and temperature. Specifically: 1) Charles' law states that the volume of a gas is directly proportional to its temperature when pressure is kept constant. 2) If temperature increases, volume increases and if temperature decreases, volume decreases according to the formula: V1/T1 = V2/T2, where V is volume and T is temperature. 3) Examples where this relationship can be seen include hot air balloons, pool floats, baking, and fixing dents in ping pong balls by warming them in water.

Volume & Temperature Relationships- Charles Law

Volume & Temperature Relationships

Volume is the amount of ___________ a container or substance occupies.
Temperature is a ________________ property of matter that expresses hot and cold.
If the temperature increases than the volume _______________, and if the temperature
decreases than the volume decreases.
This relationship can be expressed by an equation relating the initial volume (V1) and initial
temperature (T1) to the final volume (V2) and final temperature (T2).

Charles Law
o What does the Charles Law state?

______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
o Pressure is Constant
True False
TEMPERATURE SHOULD ALWAYS BE IN KELVIN (K) !!
o How to convert degrees Celsius to K?

Add ____________
V1 V2
Formula: =
T 1 T2

V1: Initial Volume of Gas V2: Final Volume of Gas

T1: Initial Temperature of Gas T1: Final Temperature of Gas

Real Life Examples

o Hot Air Balloon
This occurs with the ignition of the fuel, the air inside the envelope heats up, the hot air
expands. As the temperature of the air increases, the volume of the air also increases and the
density decreases.

o Pool Floats

When the water and the climate is cool it causes for the floats to shrink, but when water is
warm and in a hot climate, they get overinflated.

o Bakery

Yeast is often used in baking to make bakery products fluffy. Yeast releases carbon dioxide
bubbles. These carbon dioxide bubbles expand with high temperature. The expansion of the
carbon dioxide bubbles with increasing temperature causes the bakery products to become
fluffy.
o Ping Pong Balls

Ping-pong balls can get a dent when a strong blow is done. A method used to fix this is to
immerse the ball into warm water. The temperature of the air inside the ball increases,
therefore the air expands. The ball is inflated, and dents are fixed.
How to Work It Out? (Using the GUESS Method)
A sample of hydrogen has an initial temperature of 50°C. When the temperature is lowered
to 10°C, the volume of hydrogen becomes 2 L. What was the initial volume of the hydrogen?

G: 50 C, 2 L at 10 C
V1 V2
U: V1 (Initial Volume) E: =
T 1 T2
? 2L
S: =
50+273.15 10+ 273.15

2× 323.15= 643.3
643.3/ 283.15

S: 2.27 L
