Lesson Summary:

This lesson will stem around kindergartens learning proper language. Such as, upper and lower-case letters,
nouns and verbs, and recognizing punctuation.
At the end of the lessons students should be able to understand and master these skills.

Estimated Duration:

This lesson plan should take about 2 months to complete for kindergarten. 35 minutes a day once week. We
will do 20 minutes in the morning reviewing and learning what we are doing. Then we will spend the second
15 minutes going over it again and practicing. It will include activities and periods of writing. The total
minutes of this lesson will be 280 minutes.

Commentary: For this lesson I plan to have the students do multiple activities learning letters and how to
write them. I then plan to have the students learn as a class how to use upper and lower-case letters and
identifying nouns and verbs. After this have the students be able to write down multiple words together to
create a sentence with the proper punctuation. I think the biggest challenge of this lesson will be getting the
children to focus for 20 minutes straight, work as a class and be able to all understand together. I think the
best way to get them hooked and to have fun is to create games and activities in learning letters and words.

Instructional Procedures:

Day 1: Going over alphabet and letters.

First 20 minutes: Introductory activity- Students will be showed the alphabet and the different letters and
required to all try and sound them out as a class.
Last 15 minutes: I will begin the teach the alphabet song to the students once they learn the sounds of each
letter confidently. Students will then be required to sing the alphabet song back to me together helping each
other. Followed by each student being ask the pronunciation of one letter. After this the students will be
given little homework assignments for the remainder of the week requiring them to fully learn the alphabet.

Day 2: By this day in the second week students should be familiar with the alphabet.
First 20 minutes: I will then begin to introduce the difference between upper and lower-case letters to the
students. I will have them all writing down the difference with me best that they can while I write it on the
board. I will then go around to each student and help them make sure they are writing it properly or to their
best ability.
Last 15 minutes: The second half of the lesson I will then provide a fun activity to the students regarding
upper and lower-case letters. Each of the students will be provided a IPad and I will ask them to write down
an upper or lower-case letters and hold it up for me to see. I will then write the correct letter on the board
showing them what it should be, so they can determine if it is right or wrong and know the proper way to
write it. Students will then be provided fun homework assignments continuing to teach them proper upper
and lower-case letters for the rest of the week.

Day 3: By this week the students should be familiar with the upper and lower-case letters.
First 20 minutes: To start the class we will begin reviewing the alphabet and upper and lower-case letters.
We will start with going over it as a class and then the students will do a worksheet activity practicing
writing their letters.
Last 15 minutes: I will then go around the room and work with each student making sure that they are
understanding it. I will then send the students home with more fun activities during the week on upper and
lower-case letters.
Day 4: By this week students should understand the difference in letters.
First 20 minutes: I will begin to introduce noun words to the children. First, we will start by watching a fun
video called “Schoolhouse rock- what is a noun?” After this we will discuss what we all thought of the video
and I will ask the kids to help me name nouns around the classroom and the school.
Last 15 minutes: The second 10 minutes of class I will ask the kids to tell me about nouns outside of the
classroom. Such as, things on the playground or different buildings or places the kids go. The students will
then get a worksheet to take home for the week where they will write down some nouns that might be in
their house.

Day 5: By this day students should be familiar with nouns.

First 20 minutes: First, we will go over nouns and do a quick worksheet identifying nouns to refresh the
student’s memories. I will then begin to introduce what verbs are to the students. We will start off with
another Schoolhouse rock video but on verbs this time. Then proceed to discuss as a class what we thought
of the video and begin trying to name some things we all do or are doing that are verbs.
Last 15 minutes: The students and I will then begin to talk about daily things that we do that are verbs. Such
as, listening to me talk, playing, thinking, etc. Then I will send the students home with fun worksheets for
the week where they will write down a few things they did since they left school that are verbs.

Day 6: By this day the students should be should be familiar with verbs.
First 20 minutes: To start the class we will review nouns and verbs and what they are. We will also begin to
compare the two so students can learn to differentiate the two. I will then do a brief description of
punctuation to introduce it to the students. I will start by writing different sentences on the board with the
proper punctuation and some sentences with no punctuation that the students will help me determine the
proper punctuation to use based on the correct sentences.
Last 15 minutes: I will then provide the students with a worksheet to work on together where they try and
put the proper punctuation at the end of simple sentence. Then for the week I will send home fun worksheets
for the students to do at home where they work on putting the proper punctuation on sentences. Also a few
noun and verb identification worksheets to keep the memory fresh.

Day 7: By this day students should be familiar with punctuation.

First 20 minutes: Today will be review day, we will start by singing the alphabet song to refresh the
memory. Then we will do an activity with writing down upper and lower-case letters and being able to
identify them. Then we will re watch the noun and verb videos and rename things in the room or things we
are doing that are nouns and verbs.
Last 15 minutes: The last half of the class we will spend reviewing the punctuation we learned and how to
use it properly. Making sure the students have a general understanding of them. Students will then be doing
review worksheets all week.

Day 8: By this day students should be very familiar with everything we learned.
First 20 minutes: I will provide the students a short assessment on upper and lower-case letters and nouns
and verbs for the students to complete.
Last 15 minutes: We will do a short assessment on punctuation. I will go around the room and point out a
sentence I wrote on the board asking each student if they know the proper punctuation for the sentence. If
not, we will have the class work together to answer it.

Pre-Assessment:
To Pre-Asses the students I have the students do a fun activity worksheet regarding everything we are
learning over the course of the two months. This will help me to see where each of my students are and how
many are already familiar with the lesson. This worksheet will be the same one I provide after the lesson is
over allowing me to compare and see how much my students learned.
Scoring Guidelines:
The pre-assessment scoring will not affect the student at all but will be graded to give me the
knowledge of what my students already know and don’t know. The graded paper will be handed back
to the students for a parent signature so that the parents can see what the students will be learning and
be able to compare the pre-assessment with the final assessment after the lesson.
Fun activity assessments will be held for students throughout the lesson plan, such as, worksheets
and class reviews to determine if the students are understanding and following the lesson.

Post-Assessment:
The post assessment planned is a worksheet where the students show how much they learned after the
lesson. Also, will be assessed as a class on answering my questions. This way I will know if we need to go
over something again and how well the students understood the lessons.

Scoring Guidelines:
The post assessment will be graded as a pass or fail. I will simply mark the ones that are right and the
ones that are wrong and determine if the student got 50% or above. Then because they are
kindergarteners I will have them take it home for their parent or guardian to sign and go over with
them. This way everyone’s on the same page as to what the student understands or does not
understand. As for assignments and activities they will mostly be graded by completion and then I
will mark the right and wrong ones and go over it with the students.

Differentiated Instructional Support

Describe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated
students: In the case of a student who is gifted or accelerated they would be provided an extra assignment
using the IPad or computer that would be more challenging than the assignments the other students did. I
would also talk to the student and encourage them to help classmates who are struggling to understand
something.

Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the
material: I would provide this student with an extra worksheet to take home and work on, allow them to
watch more videos or examples on the IPad to explain the material in a way they understand it. I would also
offer my assistance to said student and allow them to work with me on any worksheets or activities, so I
could help to teach them more.

Both of the websites provided has places and worksheets where students can learn more about the lesson and
improve their vocabulary even further. One is free for a month then subscription and the other is always free.
This way students have to opportunity to choose whether they would want to print out fun activities to do or
be able to do the activities on the computer.

Homework Options and Home Connections

Students will be given fun worksheets and activities home and will be encouraged to work with their parents
on it for a few minutes after school. I would help encourage the parents to help by providing them weekly
information on what we are learning in the classroom and will ask them to sign the student take home
worksheet or activity if possible.

Interdisciplinary Connections
The lesson could be integrated with other content area by additionally mentioning what an adjective also is
while teaching nouns and verbs. Not so much to confuse the students but, enough for them to hear and know
there is such thing as adjectives also. I could also integrate sentence structure while teaching punctuation. I
could point out where verbs and nouns are in a sentence and explain why the structure makes sense and why
the punctuation is there. This way the students will be introduced to other things we will be learning during
the school year.

Materials and Resources:

For teachers Materials: Smartboard, white board or television that will play videos. Preferably just
the smartboard if the school has one. If not, I will provide a large white board and
television for the classrooms use. IPad’s for the students to practice writing and be able
to watch videos. I will provide these myself if needed. Worksheets, videos and writing
utensils for the students to use. I will print them off and purchase these materials.

For students The students will need access to a smartboard in the classroom and IPads hopefully
also already part of the classroom. If not, small white boards will be available. Students
will also need writing utensils to complete activities.
Key Vocabulary
Alphabet, nouns, and verbs

Additional Notes

Due to the class being kindergarteners it is possible I would have to go through this lesson more than one
time or that it may take longer than the estimated time to complete the lesson. I will also have to come up
with ways to keep the students involved and having fun, so they don’t lose focus.
