Title of Research

This research proposal aims to explain the importance of smart grid deployment in the Asia-Pacific region. It identifies key priorities and barriers for smart grid research and development, such as reducing energy consumption through home energy management systems. The proposal discusses three main technological components of smart grids - distribution automation, personal energy management, and advanced metering infrastructure. It also provides an overview of smart grid projects underway in the Asia-Pacific region and reviews literature on home energy management systems, including projects that use mobile apps, renewable energy integration, and appliance control to reduce energy usage.

Title of research:

Energy Production and Management through Smart Grid

Objectives:
 To identify key priorities and barriers for research development in Smart Grid
 To reduce energy consumption
 Home Energy Management System (HEMS)

Brief Introduction:
The smart grid, which is known as the next-generation power grid, uses two-way
flows of electricity and information to create a widely distributed automated
energy delivery network. Three major systems are explored namely the smart
infrastructure system, the smart management system, and the smart protection
system. Possible future directions are also proposed in each system. For the
smart infrastructure system, we specifically explore the smart energy subsystem,
the smart information subsystem, and the smart communication subsystem.
Various management objectives, such as improving energy efficiency, profiling
demand, maximizing utility, reducing cost, and controlling emission are explored
for the smart management system and for the smart protection system, various
failure protection mechanisms which improve the reliability of the smart grid, and
the security and privacy issues in the smart grid are explored.

The purpose of this proposal is to explain the importance of Smart Grid

Deployment in Asia-Pacific region. The proposal throws the light on various
problems and challenges related to electricity grids that are faced in Asia-Pacific
region and the solution to manage those problems by adopting the vision of a
“Smart Grid.” The essence of this vision is “a fully-automated power delivery
network that can ensure a two-way flow of electricity and information between the
power grids and appliances and all points in between”. It also provides the
overview on the three key technological components of Smart Grid that includes:

• Distribution Automation(DA)

• Personal Energy Management(PEM)

• Advanced Metering Infrastructure(AMI)

Focusing in on the role of the above three key components of Smart Grid , The
Introduction on the factors that are pulling and pushing the utilities to change the
way they operate in order to improve the current services. The flow then involves
the explanation on Moving beyond AMI to Adopt Smart Grid Vision which
includes the overview of all the key components of Smart Grid and thus focusing
on the requirement to make the electricity grid “Smart” and revolutionizing the
electric power networks. The further work is on the Ongoing and Future Projects
on Smart grid in Asia-Pacific region

Literature Review of HEMS:

[1] a project which has small cost used to control the home appliances by
controlling their functions through mobile app and microcontroller. The load of
home can be remotely control by using android app. This can also be done by
using laptop. A smart phone with installed android app is used as a transmitter
end from the user who can send messages which contains different commands
and functions. The other mobile is located at the specific area where automation
system is present. GSM Module is located where automation system is located.
The message received by mobile is stored in SIM memory. A LCD is used which
shows the status of task when it is done. Consumers can monitor the energy
consumption on daily or monthly basis.
In [2] in this paper HEMS is based on an I-plug or intelligent plug point. A user
interface and a local hub are also used. The load relates to the I-plug. The main
operation of intelligent plug is to measure energy consumption and send the
generated data to the local server. ZigBee module is also used as home area
network i.e. to transfer data from local hub to I-plug. Local hub is an Arduino
microcontroller (The detail of Arduino is discussed later in hardware model of
project). One ZigBee module relates to the Arduino and other with I-plug. Arduino
is also linked with smart meter. The unit which is known as energy measurement
unit consists of a current and voltage and now multiply V & I over a cycle and
calculate the value. Thus, the value we get is now multiplied with regulator value
and is sent to Arduino or local hub by serial communication pins.
In [3] this research paper is about the delivery of Information in Smart Grid.
Home energy management system is the important component of a shrewd city.
Home energy management system is necessary for the IOT, internet of things
(appliances communicates with each other through internet). The system we
defined collects the data from sensors and PMV readings of
16
different quantified moments. The designed system gives reliable information to
maintain power preservation to each person. For checking the system ability, it’s
been installed in homes for fourteen days. 4.1% reduction in electricity ingesting
and an increase in ease level is attained.
In [4] the energy usage optimization is a critical issue now a days so that the new
and advanced strategy is the Home Energy Management System in Smart Grid.
Different appliances are given tasks to perform at their own requirements. The
shifting of load from on peak hours to off peak hours is not easy. The proposed
scheme is to control appliances, reduce energy usage and the integration of
renewable energy sources.
In [5] in today’s grid consumers are not aware but in smart grid consumers are
well informed. It improves power quality and reliability. Two-way conservation is
done by Smart Meter. Smart meter provides the real time response if appliances
are automatically controlled and sensed energy consumption. Both consumer
and utility are well informed and both communicate with each other.
In [6] without use of solar energy it is impossible to overcome the electricity
challenges so PV solar system is installed in HEMS due to which efficiency is
improved and load is shifted from on to off peak load hours. Solar system has
maximum efficiency when people are on their work than the excessive stored
energy is injected into the grid. When sun radiations are more intense it will have
maximum efficiency. The clean energy which is known as solar energy, have no
bad impact on environment and it reduces the bills. The installation of solar
system on houses leads us to a Micro Generation. So cost effective and
sustainable energy is generated, load shedding is reduced and this clean energy
is also environment friendly.
In [7] a home energy management system, all appliances are controlled by
mobile phone by developing an application such as isHOME1 and isHOME2.
Appliances are controlled and they communicate with each other by Bluetooth.
They communicate with each other wirelessly. All appliances are controlled by
the mobile and necessary appliances are switched on while unnecessary
appliances are switched off. This will reduce the energy consumption and energy
cost. Some necessary tools are used to develop such application. If such type of
application is developed so it is an easiest way to control devices from any
corner of home. Hence energy consumption will be reduced
