Question 1
Why does fidelity play an important part in an FFS experience?’
ANS: (Fidelity is the degree to which the simulator looks like the real aircraft (Allen, Hays, & Buffardi,
2001; Noble, 2002).The trainees can gain more actual knowledge, abilities and skills from the high
fidelity FFS which is close to the real aircraft.)

Question 2
How does a Collimated display system improve the pilot experience in an FFS?
ANS: (Based on the report from ‘A variable-collimation display system’, collimated display system
allows the pilot to identify environment features and determine rate and direction of movement, rate of
closure, orientation distance from obstacles and height above the terrain.)

Question 3
List, in bullet points, the 3 most important human senses with regard to simulation.
1) Sight – Photochemical inputs
2) Hearing – Important for warnings
3) Touch – Important when multi-tasking and for switch recognition.

Question 4
1. Briefly describe:
a) What is control loading?
Ans: (Control loading is used to provide pilots with realistic flight control forces in a flight
simulator.)

b) Why is it important?
Ans: (It is because control loading can allow situating the actuators closer to the pilot. This is
necessary for mission training system that can be easily deployed and moved around the world.)

Question 5
a) What is meant by Collimation in simulation?
Ans: (The collimation system shows imagery of the out-the-window world to the pilots, is generally
designed so that the imagery appears at a distant focus.)

b) What visual limitation of earlier systems did this overcome?

Ans: (High-end visual systems for flight simulators provide monoscopic visual cues using either
real-image or fixed-collimated displays. These display technologies cannot fully support visual cued
for both high altitude and low altitude operations.)

Question 6
List, in bullet points, 5 considerations, when deciding to buy a simulator or to use an externally owned
simulator.
 Enhance training
 Maintain proficiency
 Practice air traffic control communication
 Improve navigation skills
 Mitigate risk
Question 7
Describe the startle effect experienced by pilots, both in the aircraft or in a simulator
Ans: (According to SKYbrary, startle effect is the physical and mental response to a sudden intense and
unexpected stimulus. It commonly known as the ‘fight or flight’ reflex, will occur in response to what
may be perceived as a harmful event. The fight or flight response enables us to react with appropriate
action.)

Question 8
List in bullet points, 3 advantages and 3 disadvantages of using an electric motion system in FFS.
Advantages Disadvantages
 Electric motion system uses much  The life cycles for an electric motion
less electric energy system is quite short.
 Electric motion system will be safer  Great heat will be generated by the
due to the safety feature while electric motion system which will
power-cuts happen migrate to the surrounding
environment
 Electric motion system is easily to  Electric motion system will produce
repair and maintenance some noise pollution

Question 9
List, in bullet points, 5 reasons why Flight Simulation is important to modern commercial airline
operations?
 Flight simulation determine the safety levels of modern general, public, and commercial
aviation
 Economical approach towards pilot training. Flight simulation offer training at extremely low
costs.
 The possibility of interconnecting simulators into clusters using the Distributed Interactive
Simulation technology
 Flight simulation will also simulate joint flight missions and operations that are applied widely
in the military.
 Flight simulation achieves all the training objectives using simulation alone. Trainees can
practice by their own without any trainer safely.
