The document discusses the three states of matter - solid, liquid, and gas. It explains their properties and how matter can change between these states through processes like melting, freezing, evaporation, and condensation. The document also introduces mixtures and solutions, defining them as combinations of substances that can or cannot be easily separated, with examples of sand/water and sugar/water. It identifies the components of a solution as the solute and solvent.

Remark: You know about matter and its states - Matter has three states; solid, liquid gas - Matter has weight and takes up space. ➢ Solid states are hard and their mole cules are tightly packed. - They have a fixed shape also they cannot be changed easily. ➢ Liquid states: all liquids have a fixed volume but they do not have a fixed shape. - The molecules in liquid are not closely packed. - Liquids can flow. ➢ Gaseous state: When you boil water it changes to its gas form water vapour. - The molecules in gases are far a part and take up all the space. - Gas have no shape and no volume. - It can flow more than liquids. Change of state ➢ Matter can change from one state to another. ➢ Melting: is a process of solid changed in to liquid? ➢ Freezing: is a process of liquid changed into solid by cooling. ➢ Evaporation: is a process of liquid changed into gas/vapour by heating. ➢ Condensation: is a process of gas changed into liquid by cooling. ➢ Sublimation: Sometimes, a solid can turn directly into a gas when you heat it. ➢ Deposition: When a gas turns directly into a solid by cooling. Mixtures and Solutions ➢ When we mix two substances together they form a mixture or a solution. ➢ If we can separate the two substances easily form a mixture. Eg: sand mixed with water we can separate by filtering. • Sand + water = mixture ➢ When we cannot separate the two substance sea silly they form a solution. Eg: Sugar and water we cannot separate them easily. Sugar + Water → Sweet Water
Solute Solvent Solution
- The solvent and the solute together form the solution. - There are two kinds of substances: Soluble and insoluble Exercise Page 77 A = 1-5
