2. Description of the activity
2.1. Origin and background (max 1500 characters)
Please provide a brief description of the motivations that led to the presentation of the current proposal
There are special times for education, when education has to go “online”, as laboratory
classrooms are unavailable, due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemics.
Still,“INNOVATION is the ability to see change as an opportunity – not a threat” (Steve
Jobs).
The general context for the current proposal is to overcome the logistical difficulties of
the small department “Fundamental of Physics for Engineers”, rising from the lack of
access to especially equipped classrooms: the classroom meetings with students have
been suspended and the educational courses are taking place online.
Due to the extraordinary nature of the Call, the quick implementation date and to the fact
that we want a large number of students to benefit from the proposed educational
solutions, there will be two persons responsible for the organization, implementation and
management of the activities: lect.dr.ing. Beatrice Costache (Fundamentals of Electrical
Engineering and Electronics) and lect.dr.phys. Marius Costache (Physics).
Physics is the foundation of any engineering activity and Physics laboratory courses
need practical experiments, not simple simulations as provided by most software offers.
2.2. Description, objectives and expected results (max 4000 characters)
Please describe clearly and in very practical terms the intervention logic and the activities of your project
vis-à-vis the selected core sector. Clearly indicate related expected results and which is the benefit that
your Activity will bring to which target groups(s). Please make sure to be as specific as possible.
Applying theoretical knowledge in engineering practice is a challenge for nowadays
students. Engineering education should take advantage of every new technology, fixing
any novel acquisition through demonstrations and practice.
SELECTED CORE SECTOR: EDUCATION AND E-LEARNING.
The project aims at offering an effective educational tool for TEACHERS, to acquire data
and carry out experiments in their home environment and sharing them online to the
students, to help them understand real physical phenomena. Thus we try to overcome
the logistical difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemics and avoid the use of virtual
experiments and simulation data, creating a material basis with digital solutions for
classical Physics experiments.
TARGET GROUP: STUDENTS FROM CEI EU AND NON-EU MEMBER STATES.
We target at ensuring quality education and quality distance learning and expect to form
practical abilities and useful engineering skills for students studying “General Physics”
and “Fundamentals of Electricity” (courses compulsory for first and second year
students) of several CEI member states (Romania, Moldova, Serbia, Poland).
EXPECTED RESULTS: PHYSICS EXPERIMENTS WITH THE AID OF ARDUINO
MICROCONTROLLER.
The proposed educational activities (computer assisted Physics) will be implemented
3
Extraordinary Call for Proposals 2020 _ Application Form
using the ARDUINO microcontroller, a programmable open-source circuit-board, based
on easy-to-use hardware and software. Arduino boards are able to read an input signal
(pressure, light) and turn it into an output signal (activation of a motor, turning on of a
LED), collecting and displaying digital data. The Arduino IDE (Integrated Development
Environment) is a free-software licensed application written in C and C++, operating in
Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. The large choice of available sensors (temperature,
humidity, magnetic, pressure, IR emission/receiver, ..) offer flexibility in describing a
large range of fundamental physical phenomena.
There are several STEPS FOR THE EXECUTION OF THE PROPOSAL:
- purchase of the Arduino equipment;
- development of several Physics experiments (for example, study of the
gravitational force, Newton’s laws of motion, friction forces, Optics, Faraday’s law
of induction, Ohm’s law);
- tutorials describing the experiments, to be easily accessible to students;
- online realisation of experiments in the online presence of students (using an
online streaming platform);
- public dissemination of results in dedicated websites and research journals to
ensure the benefits of developed solutions to a large number of persons.
2.3. Target group(s)1
Please indicate which target group(s) from which CEI Member State(s) will benefit from your Activity.
Please provide also tentative numbers

2.4. Compatibility with the requirements of the Call (max 1500 characters)
Please explain how the proposed activity meets the requirements of the Call, in particular the provisions of
Chapter 2 (Areas of Intervention) and Chapter 6.3 (Eligible Activities and Eligible Expenses)
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemics has suspended the educational meetings in
classrooms, rousing the challenge to find alternative ways of providing quality education
to students.
The small department “Fundamental of Physics for Engineers” of the Politehnica
University Timișoara (a public university) proposes digital solutions to classical Physics
experiments to be carried out in home environment, overcoming the logistical difficulties
due to the fact that laboratory classrooms are unavailable. Several Physics experiments,
based on real data collected with the Arduino microcontroller, will be developed and
shared online to the students, to form useful engineering skills.
The recently launched "COVID-19 Extraordinary Call for Proposals, for projects in fields
of healthcare, education & MSMEs" is warmly welcomed, the current proposal aiming to
enable through the CEI-grant the PURCHASE OF EQUIPMENT FOR E-LEARNING
PURPOSES, and develop and disseminate experiments in the area of Physics, to
facilitate transfer of scientific knowledge between and among education experts and
operators belonging equally to CEI EU Member States and CEI non-EU Member States.
We aim to act quickly and efficiently in the INTERVENTION AREA 2. EDUCATION AND
E-LEARNING/DISTANCE LEARNING and provide effective remote educational tools for
teachers and students of CEI Member States (Romania, Moldova, Serbia and Poland).
2.5. CEI visibility (Max 1500 characters)
Please describe which actions you are planning to ensure adequate CEI visibility, including dissemination
activities in the post-implementation phase
CEI visibility can be ensured through the design of a dedicated website, publicly
available on the Politehnica University Timisoara official website. Dissemination through
social media and press articles will also be targeted.
The use of ARDUINO microcontroller in didactics is a new and up-to-date research
domain, being used to enliven and enhance lessons and make them more attractive to
students. Experiments can be described in academic journals, indexed in prestigious
international databases, such as Web of Science– the highest degree of recognition and
visibility a scientific/didactic wok can obtain. To ensure the maximum CEI visibility, each
published paper will contain in the “Acknowledgement” section the sentence “This
activity has received funding from the Central European Initiative”.
We intend to propose papers to academic journals such as ROMANIAN REPORTS IN
PHYSICS or REVUE ROUMAINE DES SCIENCE TECHNIQUES. The CEI-logo can be
added to books dedicated to the dissemination of the project’s results. The tutorials can
be published by the POLITEHNICA Publishing House (Timișoara, Romania), founded in
1996 to support the educational process. International visibility of the Central European
Initiative and CEI-logo can be achieved also through the publication in a book series
dedicated to the project, ensured by TRIVENT-PUBLISHING House (Budapest,
Hungary), “Exact Sciences” Series, with the title “Engineering the E-Challenge:
Improving Creativity and Engineering Skills through Experiments”.
