Foundation year
Human Centered Design , BDes. Year 2019-2020
A Year of Foundation
Foundation in Design is introducing tools and techniques in Art, Design and Technology as methods and processes.
Ranging from Fine Arts techniques, Literature writing, Digital softwares, Environment Exposure and Formal Presenta-
tions. There are five programmes held throughout the year namely:
• General Studies - As part of Electives , we study the intregretion of Humantities, Culture and Development
which is in depth learning and critical thinking.
• Contextual Enquiry - This programme offers freedom to explore a philosophy or context
• Generic Skills - By improvising our skills in various concepts, we can integret those skills in our works we
produce hence this programme endorses skill development and greater capabilities.
• Interim - An introduction to practice in new and emerging areas of art and design by exploring different places
and paradigms.
• Workshop - This is hands on experince work space that lets us explore with different materials in our
environment.
General Studies
Food Stories
• Understanding food as culture , religion and socio-political repsonses.
• Meat prohibitions and benefits - omnivorous paradox?
• Food market and social norms
• Mass productions and leverage of cost of crops in foreign lands
• Watched videos about food criticism and socio political conflicts
Literature Writing
• Reading short stories on notable writers of different cultures and writing styles
• Metaphorical reading of different subjects
• Discussions on content , meaning of cultures and lifestyles of certain stories
• Reflective and Creative Writing assignments
Generic Skills
Mark Making
• Understanding drawing skills with different materials and mediums.
• Textural patterns of different shading materials with human gesutres
as a collective collage that coexists.
• Creating marks or identities for certain everyday or rare phrases used.
• Using materials like thread, toothbrush to create a monochromatic
scenery, marking its simplicity
• Line drawings, gradient shading were some exercises
implementend to improve our skills.
• Selecting marks or keywords from a written
piece and creating a visual of the combined
marks.
Digital Tool Making
• Focusing on software skills Eg. Photoshop, Indesign, Typography and Book development
• With photoshop essential tools, hair selection with appropriate background using levels,
channels was one of our tasks.
• Indicating the ongoing battle between the Hindus and Muslims, we created a monatge using
Photoshop and Illustrator, keeping the theme of Taj Mahal as the next attack.
• Animation can also be done on photoshop, hence created a gif of any kind but focusing on
Fps, number of frames and the continous flow of the content.
• Created a booklet keeping the book design in mind. Typographic
guidelines to be created and researched on the fonts we used.
Understanding margins, leading, paragraph spacing and applying these
methods to our booklet.
Contexutal Enquiry
Order & Chaos
• Understanding the Japanese philosophy Wabi- Sabi which is the imperfection and transcience of subjective art, in
various mediums and ideas.
• Applying art as a medium with the fusion of colors that is chaotic but seemlessily forms an order of colors of
patterns. Creating stamps from waste objects on cloth applying the concept of order and chaos
• Boro clothing (utilising waste cloth as wearable fashion), Bonsai trees symbolizing peace and balance, rock garden
having faith and harmony in strcutres and creating videos (scratch software) and sounds as platforms to perceive
the imperfection of choas and order.
Space & Place
• The relationship acquired between space and place and implementing that in
visual formats such as Photoshop, charcoal, Assemblage box.
• Reading extracts of space and place interdependency , we juxtaposed
relative images, in this case, exhile and confinement, using
Photoshop. The charocal collaboration of another chapter (fear of
spirits and ghosts) is another example of utlizing space that creates
place.
• Taking current affairs, juxtaposing the Pakistan earthquake in the
early 20’s and global warming, in this case, melting of polar ice caps
• The concept of Assemblage box was portayed in one of the chapters
(fear of disease), hence created a disease box indicating terms,
objects, media relative to diease in space and place dilemma.
Play & Invent
• Analyzing disability as a whole, its advantages, different types and
outcomes. We had to invent a solution to bring awarness of disability
• Created an activity for the disabled during the day, using homemade
rice glue to make newspaper packets in simple steps.
• Considering Deafblindness, invented a learning concept of cubicals
imprinted with sign language with its respective english letter.
Additionally, punched holes for
braille letters making them light
up with installed lights.
Form & Structure
• Understanding form and structure relationship, dependency and importance.
• Created a visual representation of data from tangible and intangible objects but conveys
its relative meaning.
• Using color pencils are as a tangile object, we looked at its parameters,
surveys from different people of different mastery skills and created a
a line graph to compare levels like beginner, intermediate and
advanced.
• Using Music Production as an intangile object, we looked at its song
composition with respect to layering, interdepency and co-existence.
Hence influenced from the mother board diagram and jenga pieces,
created a structural representation of the concept of production.
• With visual reflections, using post its and categorising with videos,
actvities, reading done in class.
Interim
Environmental Exposure in Madhya Pradesh
• Explored the ruins of the factory from the Bhopal Gas Tragedy
• Witnessed a bike rent service system called Chartered. These bikes rent with
QR code and are electrically run.
• Visited a Rewa Society, where weavers and artisans master the craft of
textiles in products such as Sarees, shawls. A nearby school is also built for
the weavers children hence helping the poor for their needs.
• Visited Maheshwar, a small town near the Narmada river, where we talked to locals and learned about their culture,
proprietaries and the adaptive environment we were living in.
Foley Sounds of Maheshwar
• Drawn by the sounds resonated near the riverbanks and around the town, I had created an interactive sound
experiment studio to replicate (not entirely) the sounds of Maheshwar.
• River water, construction noise, boat rides on water, birds chirping, fish in water, road singer, weaving are some Eg.
• The materials available for people to experiment were, rubiks cube, bottle, bangles, steel ruler, long wood sticks, etc.
• To make it audible to hear, there’s a recording device that must be held near the sound and the output of that sound
is heard by the speaker in max volume.
• This concept of creating materialistics sounds from tangile objects is called Foley and it is followed in some films
today.
Workshop
Waste Management
• Discussed the concept of upcycling and jugaad, how to create products from
waste generated of all sorts as well as organic
• Bio-fence ,4 plastic bottles wrapped around a plastic net can be used as a
barrier to stop the river garbage that floats.
• Bio-enzyme, boiling of jaggery and water, an organic cleanser making it
chemical free
• Candle moulds, reusing the pile of styrofoam to create moulds.
• Incense sticks and dhoop from reused flowers, mud (wastes acquired from
religious gatherings, temples).
Exploring Paradigms
• Gaining standard, perspective or set of ideas of what constitutes
legitimate contributions to a field.
• Recorded a bus station’s daily occurences and jobs, capturing a story
behind every shot.
• Interviewed a PG caretaker, developed a connection through her
personal life, struggles to capture the audience.
• Observed a chat corner thats famous for his chats and recognition in that area, recorded his movements,
transactions and the community.
• Consistenly used Adobe Priemere pro to construct our videos adding subtitles, excess sound removal.
Other Project
Metro RailwayApp
• This multi purpose app is designed for metro travels of all the lines developed. It is a guidance and transation app
that allows travellers to check their station destination and pay the ticket online through QR code.
• Another feature is finding the nearest metro station in collaborataion with google maps. That makes the app more
convenient not just for travellers but for everybody who wants to travel by metro one time.
• A resourceful feature added is the discussion board , similar to reddit where can people can discuss matters about
metro railways, travelling, liability, costing etc. It brings us awareness about the metro reviews more concrete.
• To travel , a process is followed from pin location to drop location and step and step by procedure takes place.
