1. Introduction

Integrated Partial Discharge Sensor (IPDS) is specially designed coupling capacitor

With rubber boot and jumper cable supplied by Eaton Electrical.

By default sensors come with IPDS installation kit (Figure2):

• Mounting bracket.
• Rubber (PVC) boot with temperature rating of 115°C.
• 4’ HV jumper cable 2/0 AWG, 5/15kV by A.I.W. Corp. with a crimped connector for
connection to IPDS. 90°C temperature rating.
• Cable connector for HV cable connection to equipment terminal.
• RG-58A coaxial cable for connecting to an analyzer. Default cable length is 65’ per
sensor.
• Miscellaneous hardware (bolts, washers, spring washers,..).

Preferably use mounting and connecting hardware provided with IPDS.

Mounting torque for IPDS threaded inserts is 30-35 lbf-ft.

Note:
1. If end user has requirement exceeding temperatures ratings listed above, rubber boots
and cables with extended ratings should be ordered separately.
2. Jumper cable type and rating have been chosen for mechanical and signal propagation
properties only. Jumper cables are not designated to provide electrical insulation and
proper distances between jumpers, ground and other HV parts should be maintained.
When adequate clearances are not possible it is the user’s responsibility to select a
suitable cable.

3. Mounting of IPDS sensors

IPDS-XX has one 3/8” brass insert on its top and two inserts on its bottom. The top insert
is designated for High Voltage cable connection and two bottom inserts for IPDS mounting
to the bracket or to the ground plane directly. The third central insert at the bottom is for
printed circuit board connection and should not be used for mounting purpose.
Mounting inserts dimensions and spacing are the same for all IPDS sensors (Figures 3).

Figure 3

Printed circuit board with phase reference and protection circuitry is installed in the recess
on the bottom of the IPDS (Figure 4a). This circuitry is preinstalled and should not be
removed from IPDS.
Grounding brass strip is also preinstalled (Figure 4b.) and also should not be removed
from the IPDS.

IPDS can be mounted on mounting bracket or directly to the ground surface (Figures 4c,
and 4d).

IPDS MUST BE RELIABLY GROUNDED AT A PLACE OF INSTALLATION!

Remove paint and clean the mounting surface to ensure good contact of the mounting
bracket or the brass ground strip to the ground.

Secure signal coaxial cable to the bracket and route coax cable secure along ground
potential plane (Figures 4c, d). Do not use self sticking cable clips and mounting
bases to secure the cable if there is a danger of falling signal cable onto HV parts.
Always maintain clearance between signal cable and HV conductors!
Rule of thumb: maintain that distance same as IPDS height for given voltage class.

4. HV and Ground connections

To ensure minimum inductive impedance, all HV and ground connections should be as

short as possible. Examples of IPDS sensors installation can be found in the Appendix.
For additional information on installation for different type of apparatus refer to the
documentation supplied with the Insulgard monitor or request from Eaton Electrical.

Ground connection:

a) Using aluminum brackets from IPDS installation kit.

b) Directly attached to metal cabinet floors, walls or ceilings.

c) Attached to the custom-made ground bars, or brackets at least 1” wide and

strong enough to support the IPDS sensors. The bus bars and brackets should
be as short as possible and directly grounded on both ends to the frame.

d) Remove paint and clean the mounting surface to ensure good contact of the
mounting bracket or the brass ground strip to the ground

e) If contact of the mounting surface to the ground is of suspect, use additional low
inductance ground wire from IPDS mounting bracket to the ground bus or
grounded frame.

Always check the continuity of the IPDS ground before energizing.

6
Eaton Electrical Predictive Diagnostics IPDS User Manual V1.8

HV connection:

a) The connections to the primary (high voltage) circuits should be as short as

possible - no longer than 4’ and made of a bus bar or bare conductor with a
cross-section not less than 1 x 0.1”. Or use a non-shielded high voltage jumper
or insulated conductor of a size not less than #4 AWG. Installation kit shipped
with IPDS contains 4’ 15-kV jumper cable, one terminal and one rubber boot.
Excessive length of the jumper cable should be trimmed to minimum. Primary
purpose of the supplied jumper cable is to provide a good signal propagation
and mechanical robustness.

b) The conductors must be routed ensuring proper clearances from the grounded
and HV parts, as required by appropriate standards covering the equipment
where the IPDS to be installed. HV jumpers must not touch ground or other
phase jumpers or conductors even if proper voltage class jumpers are used and
formally can touch each other without safety concerns. Touching jumpers can
create partial discharge that can be attributed to the monitored equipment. As a
rule of thumb the gap between a bare wire jumper and ground or another phase
conductor should be at least equal to the IPDS sensor height. For 27 and 38 kV
IPDS sensor minimum clearance distance is 8” when using supplied installation
kit. Use of appropriate barriers or insulated conductors may allow significant
reduction of such clearances but requires dielectric testing of the equipment
before returning to service.

c) The connections must be free of partial discharge and corona. Avoid sharp
edges on HV connections. If connections need to be taped, proper semi-
conductive and grading tapes should be applied to avoid local concentration of
electric stresses that can cause partial discharge.

d) IPDS connections to surge capacitors or surge arresters terminals should be

avoided if possible. Such installation will significantly decrease the sensor
sensitivity because these capacitors and arresters have significant capacitance
to ground, thus reducing the PD pulse current flowing through the sensor.

5. Signal Cable connection

Connect RG-58A coaxial cable to the terminals on the IPDS printed circuit board. Connect
central conductor to terminal X3 and shield to X4 (Figures 4a and b). Use ring crimp
terminals for both conductors. Be sure that bare wires of the cable shield are completely
isolated from central wire and from ground in place of installation. Use electrical tape if
necessary.

NOTE: CABLE SHIELD MUST BE GROUNDED ON OPPOSITE (from IPDS) END.

Connection to Insulgard PD monitor provides such ground. If another analyzer or
intermediate terminations used, ground coax cable shield at coax cable termination.
If shield not grounded protection circuit will operate limiting voltage on the cable to
~20 VAC voltage.
