PHYSICS Tutorial Sheet: Laser

This document contains physics tutorial problems about lasers and optics. It includes questions about calculating the area and intensity of a laser beam image using the beam's power, aperture, wavelength, and focal length of a focusing lens. It also includes questions about coherence length, coherence time, and degree of non-monochromaticity for various light sources. Additional questions calculate refractive indices, critical angles, acceptance angles, and numerical apertures for fiber optic cables.

LASER

8. A laser beam has a power of 50 mW. It has an aperture of 5 x 10-4 m and it emits
light of wavelength 7200 Ǻ. The beam is focused with a lens of focal length 0.1
m. Calculate area and intensity of an image.
9. The coherence length for sodium light is 2.945 x 10-2 m. The wavelength of
sodium light is 5890 Ǻ. Calculate (i) the number of oscillations corresponding to
the coherence length and (ii) coherence time.
10.Calculate the coherence length for a laser beam for which the bandwidth is ∆ν =
3000 Hz.
11.For an ordinary source, coherence time τC = 10-10 Secs. Obtain the degree of non-
monochromatic for λ0 = 5500 Ǻ.
12.The core of glass fiber has refractive index 1.5 while its cladding is doped to give
a fractional change in refractive index of 0.005. Find the (i) the refractive index
of cladding (ii) critical refracting angle and (iii) acceptance angle and (iv)
numerical aperture.
