Bar Charts or Bar Graphs Bar Chart Is The Simplest Way To Represent A Data

Bar charts or bar graphs are a simple way to represent data using rectangular bars. The bars have equal width and are vertically spaced equally. The height of each bar corresponds to the frequency or value of each data point. To construct a bar chart, the x-axis is labeled with the categories being measured and the y-axis is scaled to the values or frequencies. Then bars are drawn with heights corresponding to the data values based on the y-axis scale. Bar charts allow viewers to easily visualize and compare data.

BAR CHARTS OR BAR GRAPHS

Bar chart is the simplest way to represent a data.

 It consists of rectangular bars of equal width/ breadth.
 The space between the two consecutive bars must be the same.
 Bars can be marked both vertically and horizontally but normally we use vertical bars.
 The height of bar represents the frequency of the corresponding observation.

For example, let us observe the following data of the bar chart.

How to Construct a Bar chart?

Steps in construction of bar charts/column graph:

1. On a graph, draw two lines perpendicular to each other, intersecting at 0.
The horizontal line is x-axis and vertical line is y-axis.
2. Along the horizontal axis (x-axis), choose the uniform width of bars and uniform gap
between the bars and write the names of the data items whose values are to be marked.
3. Along the vertical axis (y-axis), choose a suitable scale in order to determine the heights of
the bars for the given values. (Frequency is always taken along y-axis). Frequency could be
sales, costs, grades, scores, production amounts, population, etc.
4. Calculate the heights of the bars according to the scale chosen and draw the bars.
5. Bar chart gives the information of the number of children involved in different activities.
Interpret the data

Now that you've made your bar chart, you can have a better sense of the data because you can
visualize it. Now you can take a step back and take a look at the important aspects of this data. Here
are some things to look for:

 Outliers. Outliers are the pieces of data that fall outside the range of normal data that you
gathered.
 Gaps. Look for gaps between the data.
 Frequency. See if there's an amount that is frequently occurring. This is called the mode.
 Clusters. Look for clusters of data.

Exercises
