Demo Domain and Accounts: Administrator
Demo Domain and Accounts: Administrator
The mail server includes a sample domain already installed (merakdemo.com) and several users,
which are created during the installation process. If you are using the mail server online you must
be sure that your DNS MX records are properly configured. We have provided a section below
regarding the correct implementation of DNS MX records.
To access, run the administration interface and verify that it created the demo accounts as per
the picture below.
There are 3 different levels of users in the mail server. The user level is assigned during the
creation of each account together with the username and password. See the email addresses,
usernames and passwords for all users in our demo installation.
Administrator Specifies that this user is a full administrator and is able to change any
of the settings.
Domain Administrator Domain administrators cannot change global settings but are allowed to
administer accounts in their domains.
[email protected] Username: user Password: user
Standard This account has basic rights to use the services but cannot change any
settings.
NOTE: Make sure to change the passwords for the demo accounts as soon before connecting
the mail server to the Internet.
Common Way
Common way refers to shortcuts, toolbar icons or items in the Accounts menu. Each of these
opens an account/domain management dialog where all options can be set. There are many
more options available outside of the Wizards process, but for now, you can just set the Name
for the domain or the Alias as well as Password options for the account and you'll be good to go.
How to Set the Mail Server for Use on the Internet
Each server operating as a mail server online must have a STATIC IP address. The static IP
address is assigned to you by your Internet provider. For example, let's imagine that your static IP
address is:
193.179.128.218 (Your IP address will be different of course)
This static IP address must be assigned to your Network Adapter in the TCP/IP Protocol
Properties. See the next screenshot from Windows 2000 as an example.
If you want your mail server to receive emails for your domain on the Internet your domain must
"point" to this static IP address in the following manner. This is provided by DNS servers.
Step-by-step example how to set the mail server for domain icewarp.com
Step # To Do If Failed
Step 1 Verify that your computer is "visible" from other a. Check if you are connected to the Internet
computers online. From a separate PC
b. Check if you have assigned IP address to
connected to the Internet, run a command
your Network Adapter
window and then enter: PING 193.179.128.218.
You will get response similar to the one pictured c. Check if your Internet provider is routing
bellow if everything is okay. this IP to your PC
d. Check if you have router or firewall open for
this IP
Step 2 Register a new domain name (or use an existing domain name): YOURNEWDOMAIN.COM and ask
your Connection Provider to create DNS "A" and "MX" records on their DNS servers.
mail.yournewdomain.com A 193.179.128.218
yournewdomain.com MX mail.yournewdomain.com 10
This can take up to 24 hours. DNS records can be prepared for you by anyone who is running a DNS
server.
Step 3 Verify that your MX records are pointing to your a. Wait one more day (up to three days)
A record. Run the DNS Query Tool which has
b. Ask person who set you DNS server to fix it
been installed along with the mail server. Set
parameters as shown below and click the
"Lookup" button. You have to see a positive
response.
Step 4 Check, that your A record a. Wait one more day (up to three days)
mail.yournewdomain.com is pointing to the
b. Ask person who set you DNS server to fix it
correct static IP address of your mail server.
Refer to the screenshot below (A query).
Step 5 Add domain to your mail server. The mail server is a MULTIDOMAIN system. Therefore, you can run
as many domains on one server with one static IP as you like.
Step 6 Enter your mail server A record to the Mail Server setup screen as shown below. If you have your
own working DNS server you can put the IP into the DNS field but it is not necessary. You can leave
the default setup as-is. Always use the Test DNS button.
Step 7 Test your mail server is not marked as open relay at http://www.abuse.net/relay.html. Simply visit the
link and enter the IP of your server. If you left the default settings as is, it will be listed as a closed
relay.
Step 8 You can now create accounts for your domain and you are ready to go. Your users can use the
WebMail client by using the following format:
http://mail.yournewdomain.com:32000/
or configure their email clients to use SMTP and POP3/IMAP
Remote Administration
It is possible to manage the mail server remotely using the administration interface. Start the
interface and select the connect function. Fill in the administrator's username, password,
hostname or IP of the server to be administered. If you changed the port of the control service
change that too. The default number is 32000. You will be able to control the remote server like
you were actually on the server.
You also have the possibility to define domain administrators and give them access to the
server's web admin interface. The web admin interface makes it possible to manage all system
domains and accounts or based on restrictions for domain administrators.
Mailing Lists
Each mailing list is usually a simple text file containing a list of email addresses. The "demo"
mailing list file is list.txt and is stored in the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Merak\config\merakdemo.com\list.txt
If you send an email to "[email protected]" the email will be forwarded to the entire mailing
list in this "list.txt" file.
List.txt [email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
You can also create a special "virtual" mailing list. Emails are then sent to all users for a specified domain without the
need to to create and maintain the list file.
Log-in to WebMail as admin and send an email to the listserver with the subject below. This
command will ask listserver to send a list of all email addresses in the mailing list
[email protected].
The returned email will contain a list of all email addresses in that mailing list.
WebMail Access
The WebMail client is installed with your mail server. It allows you to access your email from any
computer connected to the Internet. To run the WebMail client type the following into your
browser.
http://IPaddressOrHostnameOfYourServer:32000/
e.g.
http://mail.yourdomain.com:32000/
To ensure the mail server is functioning properly, send a test message to the admin user. To do
this simply click on New Message in the menu and type in the email address
[email protected]. Then click the Send Message button.
To use the WebMail client in SSL mode click on the following link:
Instant messaging
The Instant messaging server allows you to provide new, secured instant messaging services to
all mail servers users worldwide. All mail server users can chat, transfer files and join group
conferences using secured SSL.
The instant messaging server implements the Jabber open XML protocol, for more details see
http://www.jabber.org/user/userguide/. Implementation of the Jabber open XML protocol brought
the compatibility with various instant messenger clients and other modules supporting this
standard (ICQ/AOL/MSN/Yahoo modules).
All you need is an instant messenger client to connect to the server. We recommend using JAJC
which can be downloaded from our web site http://www.icewarp.com/download/.
Configuring the server is easy. You only have to activate the services in the Instant Messaging
section. Once active you can use the IM client to connect to the server.
Download JAJC and run it. The following dialog appears. Fill in the alias and domain of the user
and finally specify the Server IP in the Connection tab by filling in the IP address or the hostname
of the IM server. To use the standard demo account user fill in the following:
Account: user
Node: merakdemo.com
Server IP: localhost (if on the same machine, else specify the real IP address or the hostname of
the server running IM)
