Computer Studies (7010) – Preamble

Computer Studies is part of the optional subjects in the School Certificate Examination (Grade 12) taken at the
end of the senior secondary school. The School Certificate Examination is based on the three-year course
covering Grades 10, 11 and 12.

In 2019, the Examinations Council of Zambia undertook examination reforms which saw an introduction of School
Based Assessments (SBA) for all practical papers and changes in some theory papers. During the examination
reforms process, the Computer Studies examination question papers were analysed and reforms were made in
terms of the content and administration of the practical assessment. This process resulted in adding one
structured question in Paper 1. Like other subjects with practical components, Paper 2 - practical was changed
from being a centrally set paper to being a School Based Assessment (SBA). Based on the revised Examination
syllabus, a specimen paper has been developed for Computer Studies Paper 1.

Test Design

Computer Studies Examination will have one theory paper and a School Based Assessment. Paper 1 will have 2
Sections: Section A – structured questions and Section B - Systems analysis/Problem solving and
Programming. All questions in Section A will be compulsory while Section B will have 1 compulsory question and
one option. Paper 2 will be a School Based Assessment Component whose focus will be to assess candidates’
practical skills in spreadsheets, databases and programming.
