Coronavirus Pandemic

December 2019, the reports had started to emerge from Wuhan, a tier two city in the central
Chinese province of Hubei that a coronavirus had begun to spread among the population that
specialists had never seen before in humans.
Since then, the virus has spread leaps and bounds, both within and outside mainland China,
resulting in the World Health Organization declaring this disease as a pandemic. The novel
coronavirus or SARS-CoV-2 for short — has been by now responsible for more than 15000
deaths globally with the number of affected people increasing exponentially every day.
Coronaviruses are in general a family of viruses that victimizes the respiratory glands of
mammals. There are four "ranks" of coronaviruses, -alpha, beta, gamma and delta. While most
affected animals, a few affect human too. Only two of the above genera - alpha and beta affect
humans.
Like previous coronaviruses, the novel coronavirus also causes respiratory disease and the
symptoms finally lead to respiratory failure. The main symptoms of COVID-19 are shortness of
breath, cough and fever. The symptoms are flu-like with most patients have mild disease, and
about 20% of them progress to more severe infections, including pneumonia, a respiratory failure
which can eventually lead to fatality.
The global implications have been severe. Three hundred sixty-two thousand people have been
diagnosed with the disease by now, with around 15000 deaths across the globe. In mainland
China, at least 80,000 have infected with 3500 deaths. Italy, the new hotspot in the disease has
reported 6,077 deaths in the country with the tally of affected people increasing to whooping
63,928. More than 1,100 people have died from COVID-19 in Iran, where the number of
confirmed infections is surpassing 17,300. In the UK, the number has increased to 335 among
6,650 cases. The condition is bleaker in the US with the number of instances surging past 35,000,
with a death toll of 495. In India, by now the total infected cases stands at 470 with 7 deaths
across the country. However, most of the cases here are from an external medium. The World
Health Organization has warned that the pandemic is accelerating" with it taking 67 days for
cases to reach the 100,000 marks globally, 11 days for cases to reach 200,000 and just four days
for cases to reach 300,000.
With no vaccine available by now, indeed, prevention is better than cure in the case. The leading
health organizations have issued some guidelines which all of us must follow to prevent the
infection from spreading. It includes covering the mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing,
regular hand washing cooking meat and eggs thoroughly. One should also avoid any contact with
a person showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as sneezing and coughing. Besides, the
government has issued advisories for people to stay indoors and go out of their house only in an
emergency to prevent the spread of disease. One should strictly adhere to it. Because once the
disease starts to spread internally within the country, the consequences can be catastrophic, like
in Italy or Iran.
So stay indoors, stay safe.
