Dragon Hunter NPC
The Dragon Hunter is a Fighter in all regards except for their lone obsession in tracking down
and killing Dragons. Because of this unhealthy zeal they tend to lead a harsh and short lived
life. Dragon Hunters are limited to only being 2-6 HD characters.
There are two types of Dragon Hunters that may be encountered during an adventurers
travels. The first kind is the one of folklore that takes it’s inspiration from the Medieval tales of
knights and Questing Beasts, the Arthurian legend of Sir Lancelot, or the Golden Legend of
St. George. These hunters will be from the upper caste of civilized nations who live by a strict
code of conduct. Therefore they will always be of Lawful alignment. Another feature is that
they will have a war horse, normally wear platemail, carry a shield, and be armed with a lance
and sword. There is a 25% chance of having magic weapons and/or armor.
The second type of Dragon Hunter will have humbler beginnings typical of the more primitive
clannish cultures. These hunters will wear a mishmash of armor other than platemail and
prefer the use of pole arms, crossbows, and traps, to subdue their prey. They live by their own
code and are of Neutral alignment. There is a 10% chance of having magical weapons. The
Clash of Titans film might be a good source for the character type.
The cause of their obsession is varied. It might be duty or honor, a lost love or family member,
deep seated vengeance, or perhaps a magical charm or enchantment.
Due to their wandering nature, Type I Dragon Hunters will only be encountered in the
wilderness. There will only ever be one when encountered. Type II Dragon Hunters may be
found wherever rumor leads, in either dungeon or wilderness environments. There can be
from 1-6 appearing.
Whenever “Men” are rolled as a random encounter on the Wilderness Tables or a Man-type is
rolled on the first four Monster Level Tables, there is a 1 in 10 chance of it being a Dragon
Hunter. Roll a d10 before consulting other tables.
Dragon Hunters will fight equally well as any other Fighter of similar level when in normal
combat. Where they are exceptional is in the pursuit of their prize- the Dragon. When Dragon
Fighters encounter Dragons or Serpent-type creatures their attack dice are doubled. In
addition, they need never check morale when fighting Dragons or their ilk. They will fight to
the death.

*This NPC Class is closely related to others- the Vampire and Were Hunters. Like Dragon

to Solomon Kane, Van Helsing, or Brothers Grimm, as inspiration.
