Here are the instructions for Unit 9, "Nouns & Modifying Nouns" p.

120. Remember to underline, boldface, italicize or color your


answer. This allows me to be more focused on what you wrote.
One-word answers will be marked down. Use font #4 or #5.

1. Ex. 2.1 - p. 123 - "Count Nouns" - Write the sentences


with the correct verbs. You will write eleven (11)
sentences.

1 – Vegetables are especially low in calories and high in nutrients such as vitamins and
minerals.

2 – Current nutrition guidelines suggest eating about four or five servings of fruit and
vegetables a day.

3 – One serving is about a half-cup.

4 – Nutrition experts also suggest choosing fruit and vegetables by color - dark green,
yellow, red and so on – and eating a variety of colors each day.

5 – This is because fruit and vegetables with a lot of color often contain the highest amounts
of nutrients.

6 – Half a cup of broccoli, for example, has 50 milligrams of vitamin C and only about 15
calories.

7 – Low-calorie fruit, such as tomatoes and berries, are also a good choice.

8 – A medium tomato has only about 20 calories and 15 milligrams of vitamin C.

9 – Blueberries have 80 calories and 15 milligrams of vitamin c per cub.

10 – Intensely colored fruit and vegetables often contain antioxidants.


11 – Antioxidants also enhances the effects of vitamin C and protect the heart and your
health.
2. Ex. 2.2 - p. 124 - "The + Adjective" - Complete the
sentences with the + adjective. You will write seven (7)
sentences.

1 – The poor often do not have convenient access to fresh fruit and vegetables because there
are few good supermarkets in poor neighborhoods.
2 – There often are free food programs for the homeless in large urban areas
3 – The elderly sometimes have poor nutrition because they might suffer from diseases that
cause a loss of appetite.
4 – The young are becoming less healthy in America because of too much junk food and lack
of exercise.
5 – In Minneapolis and in many other parts of the country farmers’ markets are opening in
areas that are easier for the disabled to access.
6 – The unemployed in the United States can get help buying food by applying for SNAP,
the government-sponsored supplemental nutrition assistance program.
7 – We usually assume that the educated make wise choices when they eat, but this is not
always true.
3. Ex. 2.3. - p. 125 -"Count or Noncount Nouns?" - Read the
instructions carefully. Then, write only the sentences that
need your attention, using "s" or no "s". In any case, you
will write all sentences with blanks.

1 and 2 – Specialists who study how the body works have some advice for you
3 and 4 – With the exception of some people who work in very active occupations such as
construction or landscaping
5 – Exercise not only helps burn calories
6 and 7 – it also lowers the risk for many illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes.
8 – One way to increase activity is through aerobic exercise such as swimming.
9 – Aerobic exercise increases your intake of oxygen, which helps you burn faster.
10 and 11 – However, many physical activities count as exercise, including dancing and
gardening.
12 – Some research shows that a plant-bases diet in a good choice.

4. Ex. 3.1 - p.127 - "Noncount Nouns with Count Meanings"


- Use the correct forms of the nouns in parentheses. There
are seventeen (17) items to be submitted. Sometimes,
there will be sentences with two blanks.

1/2/3 – I’ve bought different kinds of imported chesses, a variety of coffees, and different
sorts of teas.
4 – I didn’t know you liked cheese so much.
5 – I don’t. I bought all of those chesses as gifts.
6 – I’ve had many good experiences with online shopping.
7 – Did I take a long time for the items to arrive?
8 – Two times they were late.
9 – Do you ever buy fruit online?
10 – I don’t think that’s a good idea, but I have friends who buy fruits like cherimoya and
durian online without any problems.
11 and 12 – It’s probably safe to buy coffee and tea online, right?
13 and 14 – Sure. I’ve also bought items like sugar and flour online.
15 – I buy hard-to-get sugars such as demerara and turbinado online because I can’t find
them in my local store.
16 – Ans there are special types of flour too?
17 – Well, I have a friend who is allergic to wheat so I get a few different gluten-free flours
from a special diet site.
