Class Xii Mathematics - Chapter - 1. Topic:: A B A B 1

The document discusses composite functions and inverse functions. 1. A composite function gof is defined as the function obtained by first applying f and then applying g, where f and g are functions with compatible domains and ranges. 2. A function f is invertible if there exists a function g such that gof and fog are the identity functions. In this case, g is called the inverse of f, denoted f^-1. 3. Examples are provided to illustrate computing composite functions and inverses of functions along with their solutions.

CLASS XII

Mathematics – Chapter – 1.

Topic: Composite Function and Inverse of a function

KEY NOTES:
Composition of functions: -
Let f : A  B and g : B  C , be two functions. Then, the composition of f on g, denoted by gof
and is defined as the function gof : A  C : gof (x)  g{f(x)},  x  A .
Invertible function:-
For a function f : A  B , if there exists a function g : B  A such that gof  IA and fog  IB ,
where IA andIB are identity functions, then f is called an invertible function and g is the inverse
of f and it is written as f 1  g .
