Study Plan for IIT JAM Physics

How to Get Started?

1. First, analyze the complete syllabus of IIT JAM Physics and make a list of your strong and
weak topics. Analysis of strong and weak areas will help you to decide approach towards
each section of your subject.

2. Make a quick go through previous year papers to get an idea about the paper pattern and the
level of the questions asked in the exam.

General Guidelines: -

Golden Tips to Achieve your Goal

Stepping Stone
"Everything keeps changing but fundamentals and basics remain the same." so, it is strongly
suggested to keep yourself in pace with basics of physics. Make sure you understand all
concepts thoroughly (Including concepts of 11th and 12th grade).

Playing with Formula’s

Formulas are the backbone of Physics. Learning Formulas’ is one of the most important
factor in cracking IIT JAM Physics Exam. So, give more emphasis on formulas on daily
basis.

Manage your Time

Every topic has been mentioned with expected required study hours. You can divide the total
number of hours with total number of days available for preparation. Set goals for yourself to
complete fix % of content to study weekly or Bi-weekly. Daily practice helps to increase the
speed of solving the questions which will help you at the time of exam.

Online Calculator
Give some time familiarising yourself with the Online Calculator. Take a practice test online
with the calculator so that you know how to use it. The quicker you are with your calculator the
higher you will score.

Problem Solving Skills

Problem solving is important but lengthy solutions will not help. Think smart and solve wisely, if a
solution takes more than 8 steps to solve, take a deep breath and re-think your approach.

How to Study:

1. When you start any topic, always start with the basics, divide the sub-topics over time
intervals and take a break of 10 mins between any sub topics to recall the definitions,
Important Points and formulas used. This will help you absorb better because it gives your
brain sufficient time to absorb the concepts.

“Allow yourself to be a beginner. No one starts off being excellent.”

2. When you complete theory & Concepts in any topic, then practice the solved examples
and make short notes. It will help you in the last time preparation. After covering a topic,
check out your progress by solving Unit Solved Papers (USP). Questions can be solved by
allotting fix time per question (maximum 5 minutes per question) then check the solutions
to examine your accuracy.

*Minimum 20 questions are recommended in single practice session.

3. After USP, Topics can be revised again and then, jump to solve ‘Previous Years Question’
related to that topic. Check your accuracy as well as your speed.

Make sure, you note down the tricks used in PSPs.

4. When you cover any volume (i.e. 3 units) then just revise the short notes and give a quick
practice to solved examples. After that, Entire Volume Solved Paper shall be tried by
allotting it 3 hours. Assess your score and work on your mistakes & weak topics.

5. Once you are done with the whole syllabus, it’s time to assess our true level of preparation
by giving a shot at ‘Model Solved papers’. Revise the short notes and start practicing Model
Solved papers (3 hours for every paper). Check your answers and calculate your marks to get
an idea of your accuracy and speed.

Note down your mistakes. Next day, revise topics related to mistakes, then again try to
solve the questions, you were unable to solve.

As rightly said, “Test – Analyze – Revise”, one of the best success mantras of all
time for any exam.”

6. After solving all MSPs, Similar approach shall be followed in PSPs (Previous Year Test
Papers). Compare your marks with cut off of that year.

Note: While solving PSP, note down the techniques which have been used to solve tricky &
difficult questions.

“Smart work always pays better than hard work”.
