METHOD 1 SCOPE This Standard sets out a method for transverse butt tensile testing of a welded joint 2. REFERENCED DOCUMENTS The following documents are referred to in this Standard: AS 1391 Methods for tensile testing of metals 2205 Methods for destructive testing of welds in metal 2205.1 Method 1: General requirements for tests 3. PRINCIPLE A test specimen taken transversely from a butt welded joint containing weld metal and parent metal affected by welding is subjected to uniaxial tension. The transverse butt tensile strength is then determined. 4. PREPARATION OF TEST SPECIMEN The test specimen shall be prepared in accordance with the requirements of AS 2205.1 and the following, as appropriate: (a) Where prepared from plate, the form and dimensions of a single test specimen shall be in accordance with Figure 1(a). If multiple test specimens are required, they shall be taken from the test piece in such a way that the tensile tests cover the whole thickness of the welded joint. (Figure 1(b) shows a typical example.) The weld zone shall be located centrally in the parallel length, unless otherwise specified in the application code. ® Standards Australia ‘Accessed by MONADELPHOUS GROUP LTD on 20 May 2008 AS 2205.2.1—2003 2 (b) Where prepared from pipe, the test specimen (whether it comprises the full section of the pipe, a strip cut longitudinally or a strip cut circumferentially from the pipe) shall be prepared as described in AS 1391, with the following additional provisions: (i) The parallel length (P) shall be in accordance with Figure I(c) or 1(d), as appropriate. NOTE: For end gripping, where plugs are used, they should be radiused as in Figure 1(c) so as not to affect the elongation of the specimen. (ii) The weld zone shall be located centrally in the parallel length (c) The reinforcement and penetration beads shall be left as welded, unless otherwise required by the application standard or, where no application standard exists, the weld shall be dressed in service. 5. PROCEDURE ‘The procedure shall be in accordance with AS 1391 using any convenient straining rate or, if applicable, the straining rate specified in the application Standard. Calculations of eross- sectional area shall be in accordance with the dimensions for test pieces specified in AS 1391 6 REPORTING OF RESULTS ‘The test results shall be reported as follows: (a) Identification of this and any relevant application Standards (je., ‘AS 2205.2.1, Transverse butt tensile test and .corn”) (b) Identification of test specimens by any markings (e-g., ‘Specimen A’). (©) Type of test specimen (ie., reduced section specimen, multiple specimens, full section pipe, parallel specimen (see Figure 1)). (Type of material and, if known, Standard number and grade. (©) For tensile tests, dimensions of test specimen and minimum original cross-sectional area, including parallel length where not specified by the application Standard. (©) Any special feature of the test specimen before testing (e.g, any visible imperfections). (g) The removal or otherwise of weld reinforcement. (bh) Maximum force. (i) Calculated tensile strength (Location of failure. (k) Any special features of the fracture surface (e.g., presence and type of any defects). (1) Compliance or otherwise with the application Standard, if applicable. © Standards Australia won standards.com.au ‘Accested by MONADELPHOUS GROUP LTD on 20 May 2008 3 {AS 2205.2.1—2003 assess thermally cut Pai Ends may be Test piece flattened for grip Lo é > i 6 sporox ; i — } + = 30 min | __l this section L approx. » = 25 min Tw manna” * +f (o) Mute test apeeimens peo Morimeteral ver‘30°mum thik) lal Resuced tection test specimen Tainan of erecinan ¢ length of parallel portion of reduced sera sbeSnee 2 ee wei —eacee secon = W412 £05 mm —botere: and pressure f Peale = GW (mint —bolere and pressure Vessels fnow-ferrous) (c} Full section pipe test specimen Speen enantio far {recommended for D< 75 ml ee moines Specimen may be thermally cut.
