NPTEL Basic Linear Algebra 2020 Assignment 2 - Subjective

This document is an assignment for a linear algebra course. It contains 5 questions asking students to: 1) Provide examples of different types of linear systems of 3 equations and 3 unknowns. 2) Identify which sets of points in R3 are subspaces, justifying the answers. 3) Show that 3 vectors in R3 are linearly dependent by finding coefficients such that their linear combination is the zero vector. 4) Find values of a parameter λ that make 3 vectors in R3 linearly dependent. 5) Show that 2 sets of 2x2 matrices are subspaces, and find bases for each subspace and their sum and intersection.

Assignment 2 - Subjective

Course Instructor: Prof. I. K. Rana Course TA: S. Venkitesh

Deadline: Wednesday, February 12, 2020, 23:59 IST

(1) Give an example of the following types of linear systems, consisting of three equations
in three unknowns, with justification. [4]

(a) inconsistent.
(b) consistent with no free variables.
(c) consistent with exactly one free variable.
(d) consistent with exactly two free variables.

(2) Which of the following are subspaces of R3 ? Justify. [3]

(a) The set of points (x, y, z) ∈ R3 such that x2 + y 2 = z.

(b) The set of points (x, y, z) ∈ R3 such that x + y + z = 0, x − y + z = 1.
(c) The set of points (x, y, z) ∈ R3 such that x = z, x = −z.

(3) Show that x = (1, 1, 0), y = (0, 1, 2), z = (3, 1, −4) ∈ R3 are linearly dependent by finding
α, β ∈ R such that αx + βy + z = 0. [1]

(4) Let u = (λ, 1, 0), v = (1, λ, 1), w = (0, 1, λ) ∈ R3 . Find all values of λ ∈ R for which
{u, v, w} is linearly dependent. [2]

(5) Let M2 (R) denote the set of all 2 × 2 matrices with real entries. Define

u −u − x
U= : u, x ∈ R ,
0 x

v 0
L= : v, w ∈ R .
w −v

Further, define U + L = {A + B : A ∈ U, B ∈ L}.

(a) Show that U and L are subspaces of M2 (R). [2]

(b) Find a basis for each of U, L, U + L and U ∩ L, with justification. [8]
