➢ Institutional Description:
A multispecialty privately-owned medical complex with an Emergency Department
for immediate and temporary provision of care. It provides general medical services to
patients equipped not only with the Radiology Department but also an integrated
laboratory department that provides tested medical services and routine tests. The
Emergency Department is divided into two areas exclusive for male and female patients
with eight beds each area where it provides its services 24 hours a day with a medical
team with experience in emergency situations, and receives critical cases of traffic
accidents, burns or injuries that involves minor surgeries. It caters approximately 100
patients in a day. The ER department also provides care for treatment of common
illnesses that seeks immediate interventions in any age group such as high-grade fever,
difficulty of breathing, Croup’s Disease, hypertension/ hypotension,
hyperglycemia/hypoglycemia, Iron Deficiency Anemia (Dizziness and Hypotension),
Gastritis, Irritable Bowel Disease, Allergic reactions, etc. It also accepts patients that
need nursing skills such as routine drug administration most commonly intramuscular,
intravenous and subcutaneous administration with proper assessment and provision of
prescription from the general physician-on-duty. Nevertheless, the polyclinic also offers
services for dental, dermatology, obstetrics-gynecology, pediatrics, ENT, Internal
Medicine, Surgery, Physical Therapy, and Orthopedics. The Obstetrics-Gynecology
Department provides obstetric services such as the Antenatal Care Package which
involves a routine workups (Laboratories and Ultrasonography) necessary to monitor the
patient and her conception’s condition all throughout her pregnancy to avoid or treat
pregnancy-related complications. On the other hand, it also offers gynecologic services
which includes vaginal examination and laboratories (Vaginal inflammation and
infections, bleedings, etc.) Moreover, hormonal imbalances, infertility, menstrual
irregularities, mastitis, breasts masses, galactorrhea, routine Pap’s Smear, IUD insertion
and removal are some of the cases commonly encountered. The number of patients
during the clinic hours varies from 50 to 80.

➢ Job Description:

Works alongside the clinic physician in the department (Obstetrics-Gynecology) and


participates in the assessment, provision of healthcare services, and enforcement of
safety of patients in the premises. My responsibilities are:

● Establishes a well-developed professional relationship with the physician


● Takes in charge of the flow of patients coming into the clinic accordingly
● Assists patients all throughout the obstetrical/gynecological procedures by providing
proper instruction and health teachings while ensuring safety as well
● Assists patients during their prenatal and antenatal care sessions and performs
basic nursing skills such as vital signs and weight taking with proper heath education
and documentation
● Performs fetal heart monitoring with the use of portable fetal doppler
● Prepares the ultrasound machine which includes patient data encoding and assists
the patient on bed while explaining the procedure for ultrasound to be performed by
the physician
● During vaginal examinations, assists the patient on executing the proper positioning
for the exam while instructing and educating the patient about the procedure as
well. Evaluates the patient’s understanding about the procedure before the
performance of the procedure
● Assists and attends to the physician’s needs during clinical check-ups and procedures
such as the provision of specific forms needed and necessary instruments during
procedures
● Ensures availability of instruments and materials needed in the department
especially the cleaning and autoclaving of instruments, and the accessibility of
personal protective equipment
● Strictly enforces cleanliness and standard precaution at all times especially the risk
of contamination of the area from the body fluids of patients undergoing procedures
such as vaginal speculum examinations, vaginal specimen collection, IUD insertion
and extraction.
● Acts on emergency situations that are encountered during the clinic hours such as
sudden syncope with pallor and hypotension on patients with vaginal bleeding, and
early pregnancy hemorrhage with pelvic pain, etc.
● Liaises with appropriate internal support services which involves the diagnostic
laboratory department, emergency department, internal medicine, dermatology,
surgery and radiology to provide seamless care
● Works closely with members of multidisciplinary health care team to provide a
continuous and effective level of care to patients
Works alongside the other nurses, the general practitioner-on-duty and other team
in the ER department. My responsibilities are:
● Builds rapport with ill patients who seeks immediate interventions
● Upon entering the Emergency Unit, assesses the patient’s condition by collecting
subjective chief complaints and objective cues, collects personal data including the
name and age while checking the vital signs and performs inspection, palpation,
percussion and auscultation as necessary
● Calls the physician over-the-phone and endorses to the physician the data collected
● Assists the physician during assessment, performs the doctor’s order and
documents.
● Re-evaluates the patient after the intervention. Endorses to the doctor after
evaluating. Provides proper heath education to patients
● Coordinates with the multidisciplinary departments such as the laboratory and
radiology
● Performs intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous, and sublingual administration
of drugs as per doctor’s order
● Performs good quality nursing skills on nebulization/oxygenation, IV cannula
insertion and proper regulation, blood extraction, wound and burn dressing, first aid
administration, ECG procedure, etc.
● Observes the 10 Rights of drug administration
● Wears personal protective equipment as standard precaution
● Observes orderliness and cleanliness in the department
