Constraints & Solutioning

The structure is a conventional building with no additional requirements like transfer beams or slabs, but the only constraint is the sizing of the columns. The floor space for each room should be maintained the same irrespective of
column or shear wall sizes.

Concept-1
This scheme is a standard beam-column design where beams are run to connect the columns and shear walls at appropriate locations to create an economical slab size. The column and wall placement in this concept is similar
to what had been proposed in the architectural drawings.

Column and Beam sizes

We have provided columns near staircase corners as a shear wall is not required at that location. The typical beam size is 230X700mm, but this will change based on loads and supports at certain locations.

Proposed Shear Walls

Shear walls are system of braced panels to counter the effects of lateral loads (earthquake and wind loads) acting on the structure. The applied load is generally transferred to the wall by a diaphragm or collector or drag member. They
can also act as load bearing walls and used to support the frames.

The shear walls at most of the places are as per architectural drawings but they may vary in size. The sizes of the shear walls required is more than the wall thk. provided in the drawing and this will reduce the room sizes. Also, the
number of shear walls provided are not economical and can be reduced.

The T-shape shear walls require a high reinforcement and alternate methods can be explored.

Slab System
The system is of beam-slab panel system with beams below every partition. The loads on the slab panels are distributed to the supporting beams based on the tributary area of the slab supported by the respective beam. The maximum
slab depth in this scheme is 130mm as we have partitioned the slab using beams.

Concept-2
This scheme is also a standard beam-column design where beams are run to connect the columns and shear walls at appropriate locations to create an economical slab size. The number of shear walls in this concept are
reduced and replaced with columns to create a more economical system.

Figure – Plan at Typical Floor Level

Column and Beam sizes

We have provided columns at certain locations based on our analysis. Columns are used in place of recommended shear walls at alternate locations. The approximate column sizes required for all columns will be present in the drawing
along with location.
The typical beam size is 230X700mm, but this will change based on loads and supports at certain locations.

Proposed Shear Walls

The shear walls are removed at alternate locations from the previous concept but the thickness has increased based on structural requirement. We have recommended reducing the brick wall sizes at certain locations so that the room
sizes are not affected. This is possible because of removal of alternate shear walls.

The T-shape shear walls are also replaced with a uni-directional shear wall of longer length. Here, the room sizes are changing as the wall is 200mm thk. Instead of recommended 150mm.

Slab System
The slab system is similar to the previous concept, as in a conventional beam-slab system.

Concept-3
This scheme is also standard beam-column design. In this concept, most of the proposed shear walls are removed and replaced with column-beam systems.

Figure – Plan at Typical Floor Level

Column and Beam sizes

We have provided columns at most of the locations based on our analysis. Columns are used in place of recommended shear walls at alternate locations, and the remaining shear walls are also replaced with column-beam system, but
the columns are not directly at the shear wall location. The typical beam size is 230X700mm, but this will change based on loads and supports at certain locations. The columns in this system are very highly reinforced and the column
sizes required are very high.

Proposed Shear Walls

The proposed shear walls are only at the periphery and mid-points of the structure. We have recommended reducing the brick wall sizes at certain locations so that the room sizes are not affected. This is possible because of removal of
shear walls and column positions outside of the rooms.

The T-shape shear walls require a high reinforcement and alternate methods can be explored.

Slab System
The slab system is similar to the previous concept, as in a conventional beam-slab system.

Conclusion
It is recommended to proceed with concept-2 as it incorporates both economy and rigidity of the shear wall system.
